Another Old Bunker Found in Woods; No One Living in This One

Police have come across a second old bunker in a wooded area, this one off Pine Lakes Drive.

In the more recent incident, police were checking out a report of kids hanging out in the woods June 24 when they came across the dug-out bunker, which was complete with beams and a camo tarp.

It was partly filled with water, which may make it a safety hazard, a report said.

An officer speculated in the report that it may have been an earlier attempt at building a bunker by the man living in the one on Mohawk.

At that location, authorities discovered a man living in the bunker May 22 and told him to leave. He said he thought he was allowed to live there and was working to make the bunker waterproof.

On June 4, it was discovered he was still there after some work crews came across the structure, opened the door and saw a light.

When police arrived, the tenant fled though the woods.

Police believe they know the identity of the man living underground. However, they said they were not yet sure who owns the property and whether he is permitted to be there.

On Pine Lakes, too, police said they will ask the Building Department to determine who owns the property and to try to get the structure removed.

In the meantime, police asked neighbors to call when they see kids going into the undeveloped property at the dead-end of Pine Lakes Drive.
