Big Lots Seeks to Sell Alcohol

City objects to permit, though, until building code violations are fixed

The Big Lots store on Pearl Road has applied for a permit to sell carry-out alcohol.

It marks a trend for the Columbus-based retailer, which has long carried alcohol at its California stores and has in the last year started selling it in Ohio as part of a move to bolster its grocery selections, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The company's plan has hit a snag in Strongsville, though. City Council on Tuesday formally objected to the liquor permit because of outstanding building code violations in the store.

Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said inspectors notified the store about two weeks ago about plumbing problems in the handicapped restroom, including a hot water tap that did not work and a non-functioning toilet.

He said the city performs inspections any time a liquor permit is sought or changes hands.

"It's a great way to keep these properties up," Biondillo said.

Council made its objection "conditional," Law Director Ken Kraus said. Once the violations are corrected, the city will withdraw its opposition.
