Fat Chance of Missing Out on a Good Meal at Slim & Chubby's
The Strongsville Gourmet says eatery tips the scales on taste
Many of us travel the highways and four-lane streets in the area, rarely going down the smaller roads that surround us. We pretty much find most of the things we’re looking for, the Walmarts, McDonald's and other big-box stores that we all love.
Still, some of the coolest places around are nestled out of the way on these smaller avenues and often get overlooked.
When I used to live in Berea, I would think of Prospect Road as that long, hidden stretch of pavement that was peppered with these little jewels of businesses. It still is.
Take Slim & Chubby’s, 12492 Prospect Rd., for example. It doesn’t scream attention to itself and would be easy to drive past, but that would be a mistake. This is one of those neat local places to meet out-of-town friends and family.
They’re not known for any one kind of specialty like most places. Slim & Chubby’s simply and assuredly cover all the bases, be it sandwiches, salads, hamburgers or even steaks. It’s all good.
Make that really good.
I had a hard time picking an appetizer to sample, so I ordered the appropriately titled Chubby Combo. Wow, this is a generous assortment of top-flight munchies. There are no fillers such as fries clogging this plate.
The tasty items included are potato skins, mozzarella sticks, wings, chicken fingers, onion rings and jalapeno poppers. Dips included sour cream, ranch, marinara and salsa. (The menu states horsey sauce instead of salsa, but that’s what I got.) Order one, two or three of these along with drinks and you got yourself a nice little party going on at your table.
You also get to pick the sauce that is on your wings instead of just getting mild by default. I tried the Mississippi Bourbon and, mmmm, I’m glad I did. I hate to admit that I did a pretty good job on an entree that’s designed to be shared.
The menu was large and filled with a lot of tasty-sounding stuff I would love to try. How can you lose with choices such as the Super Chubby Burger (two ½ pound patties, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, onion, Swiss and American cheeses), Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Southwest Chicken Salad and Beef Stroganoff? You can’t, unless you’re trying to lose weight!
Then there’s the daily specials. I couldn’t say no to one of them, the $5.99 Black Angus Steak dinner, available Monday and Wednesday. It comes with a large baked potato, vegetable and roll. What a great deal!
I ordered my steak medium rare and it came perfectly cooked. The baked potato was large, well-cooked with a crispy skin. (If you want sour cream, there’s an extra charge of 50 cents that I gladly paid.) I admit I didn’t eat my vegetable, which was green beans. I tried one; it was mushy. I like my beans with a little snap. That’s my only nitpick.
On the 17th of every month are corned beef specials. The weekend features live music and every Thursday is Ladies Night with three complimentary drinks (restrictions apply).
