Final: Giant Eagle Rezoning Approved Citywide and in Ward 2

Voters clear way for Market District on Pearl Road

Voters citywide and in Ward 2 supported a rezoning at the polls Tuesday that clears the way for to build an upscale Market District supermarket on Pearl Road.

Issue 4, which rezones a portion of the property from residential to business, was approved 7,840 to 5,221 citywide, according to unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. 

It was also approved 2,135 to 1,626 in Ward 2, precinct breakdowns show. The issue failed in only two of the nine precincts in Ward 2 -- 2B (190 yes, 199 no) and 2E (101 yes and 177 no). It also lost by one vote in precinct 1G.

Residents in Hunting Meadows, which abuts the Strongsville Golf site, have opposed the project, saying it will lower their home values and create noise and traffic.

Ward 2 Councilman Matt Schonhut, who supported the project, said he believes it will be "a great addition for the city."

"But for the people who have concerns, I just want to make sure we take care of those concerns when the project goes ahead," he said.

Giant Eagle representatives have said they want to close  at  and  on Pearl Road. 

• Issue 5, Strongsville United Church of Christ rezoning -- With all 36 precincts counted, the rezoning has been approved 8,766 to 4,224.

The  19130 Royalton Rd., wants to rezone part of its property at the corner of Pearl Road and Route 82 from single-family residential to public facilities.

Church officials say there is no plan for the property right now, but the rezoning will be needed to utilize it in the future for an expansion. 

The issue also was approved by voters in Ward 3.
