Food Beats Shoes as Replacement for Giant Eagle

Readers have lots of good ideas on how to use space if supermarket relocates next year

Trader Joe's and Whole Foods were the most popular suggestions for what should fill the Giant Eagle store at Westfield SouthPark if the supermarket relocates to Pearl Road next year.

In comments to Strongsville Patch and our Facebook page, more readers chose Trader Joe's than any other would-be replacement.

That was followed by Whole Foods Market, DSW, Toys R Us and IKEA

"Whole Foods or Trader Joe's would be amazing!" Kelly Sheredy wrote.

Giant Eagle announced plans  last month to build a 90,000-square-foot superstore on the site of Strongsville Golf and Honey Hut on Pearl Road. Voters have to approve a rezoning on part of the property in March for the project to go forward.

Yesterday, Strongsville Patch asked readers for suggestions on what should move into the current 60,000-square-foot Giant Eagle building if it does move.

"A large men's club, such as Crazy Horse but bigger. An indoor rifle and pistol range, steak house, and Internet cafe -- all under one roof! It would be so AWESOME! Think of the jobs/revenue that would create. Heck, I'd live there!" Winston Smith posted.

"Either a Sam Ash music store, whose closest store is in Lynhurst, or a Guitar Center music store, whose closest stores are in North Olmsted and Fairlawn," Jeff Poor suggested.

"A traffic light at that intersection in front of it," Dan Sparks wrote on Facebook. "And maybe a Gander Mountain."

Other stores people want in Strongsville: Nordstrom Rack, Container Store, PetSmart, Cheesecake Factory, an ocean and Michael's craft store.

Patty Delaney Zivkovic may have spoken for us all -- or at least a lot of us -- with her Facebook post: "A GIANT Honey Hut!"

Why do we need a bigger store? Have they ever tried going across Rt. 82 to get to Pearl Rd.? It is a nightmare, especially at the Holidays. I guess Middleburg Hts. Giant Eagle will get some more customers. When do you just keep the size of a grocery store normal, we have had so many stores come and go throughout Strongsville. The city should really be focusing on keeping what we have and not having another EMPTY store.
I won't be traveling over to Pearl Rd. to shop...
