Former Daycare Site on Howe Road Still Idle
No action yet on Kindercare project that fizzled
The site of a would-be daycare center on Howe Road that stalled in 2009 when the developer went bankrupt remains idle, with no new plans on the horizon.
The foreclosed parcel failed to sell at a sheriff's auction last week, Building Commissioner Tony Biondillo said.
"They didn't have a single bidder on it," he said.
Construction on the proposed Kindercare, to be located next to Westfield SouthPark mall, had already started in mid-2009 when Timberstone Group ran into financial trouble. The Toledo-based developer had also taken on the retail project at Whitney and Pearl roads.
A new developer has taken over the Whitney-Pearl site and has scheduled a public meeting for Jan. 24 to talk about plans there.
A resident raised the issue of the former daycare site at a City Council meeting Jan. 17, asking what was to become of the property.
Biondillo said he would contact the bank that owns the land to discuss its future.
But he said that while construction trailers remain on the site, there is nothing hazardous there.
The site is fenced and the grass has grown to almost resemble its natural state before development began, he said.
