Giant Eagle Plan Changes Approved

New Market District will be larger; one outparcel will be scrapped

A 14,330-square-foot addition to the Market District store on Pearl Road was approved Thursday night by the Strongsville Planning Commission.

The new plans show one of the two out-buildings has been eliminated, with that space now used for parking.

The north side of the Market District store will be bumped out 80 feet for the larger supermarket, which was previously about 110,000 square feet.

The store isn't saying yet what the new space will be used for.

"These are small changes in response to what the community is asking for," said Howard Landau, spokesman for Giant Eagle.

Landau said it is too early to day exactly how the space inside the store will be used.

Phil Bishop of Echo Development said Thursday that grading continues on the Pearl Road site. His company plans to deliver the parcel, with a concrete pad that will house the building, to Giant Eagle in February or March.

"We're full steam ahead," Bishop said. "This was just a little addition."

A tenant for the remaining out-building has not been named. Officials indicated Thursday a lease has not been signed for the building.

The plans also show the northern driveway now aligns with Jardine Funeral Home's across the street, which the city had requested.

"It works out perfectly for us," said Lori Daley, design engineer for Strongsville.

Giant Eagle is also installing a new wall that will serve as an added buffer for residents on Mallard Circle.

I agree.
They have been silent on what is to become of that eyesore at the corner and Get-Go is probably meant to go there.
But, as has been said before, where was the planning when they did the Pearl Rd. expansion? There should be, and will NEED to be, a right turn lane on Drake at Pearl, especially once the new store is built. Drake gets backed up now for those heading west.
So, if Get-Go goes there, Drake should be widened at that corner first.

The lot across the street, in front of the soon to be empty MetroHealth offices, was also just cleared of all trees. Any news on that site?

AL Resident, no, Giant Eagle has not yet announced who will take over their existing store. The only thing they've said is that it will not be a grocery store.

Thanks. Interested to see what occurs with that site after they move. Hopefully they sell it quickly so it's not an eyesore for very long.
