Kids May Get 2 Unexpected Days Off from School

District wants to give teachers extra in-service days in February and May

How's this for a student's dream come true? The Strongsville Schools are applying to the state for two "waiver days" this school year -- days where teachers will report to work but kids stay home.

Assistant Superintendent Cameron Ryba said teachers this year have so many state-mandated initiatives to comply with, they can't possibly finish them all in the two in-service days built into the school year.

So he is applying to the Ohio Department of Education for two "waiver days" that would provide "time for teachers to sit down and work" on the reports, he said.

If they are granted, the district would not need to add any days to the school calendar.

The waiver days also would not impact the five calamity days the district has available for school closings, Ryba said.

The days aren't set in stone yet, but the district is looking at the Friday before President's Day (Feb. 15) and the Friday before Memorial Day (May 24).

Officials said they would let parents know the exact days as soon as possible so they can plan for them.

Is this something only Strongsville teachers are dealing with?

What about election day when the kids are not allowed to go to school? I thought those (general election and primary election dates) were inservice days. If not, they could be and then we wouldn't have to add another two days off. Some parents have a limited number of vacation days and the school might want to think about how to accommodate these work sessions into time already available - like election days - to lessen the impact on children and families.

Seems to me something is wrong with planning by someone.
If one in-service day is already gone and used, that means they are concerned about trying to do what remains to be done next month and just now say they need more time?
Not sure what they do during these 2 days, but why weren't the needed days built into the school calendar like other school districts do, instead of taking academic time from the kids?
