Low-income students at Drake Elementary School will soon receive a bag of food to take home for the weekend -- just in case meals at home are scarce.

Kemper House, the Alzheimer's care facility on Prospect Road, is parnering with the national Blessings in a Backpack program to make sure kids don't go hungry.

Jennifer Nance, spokeswoman for Kemper House, said that on any given Friday, up to 150 students at Drake may be going home without knowing when their next meal will be.

"It will also be an intergenerational opportunity for our Alzheimer's residents. They will be filling the bags every week for the kids," Nance said.

Starting in January, Kemper House will distribute bags filled with prepared foods like tuna, oatmeal, breakfast bars, juice boxes, cans of soup or fruit snacks, as well as fresh fruit, every Friday. 

"It's geared to be stuff that's easy to prepare and something the kids can do on their own if they needed to. It will be enough food to get the child through the weekend," a news release said. "Some of our local families, they're in survival mode, and any little bit helps for some of our students."

Each student will get a little more than $2 worth of food a week, which translates to $80 per student for the school year.

That means the effort will cost around $12,000 a year.

How a you can help:

• "Adopt" a child to feed for $80. If you can’t donate $80 at this time, you can donate a lesser amount. Mail the tax deductible donation, made payable to Blessings in a Backpack (put Drake Elementary School Strongsville Ohio on the memo line) to:
