Meet Stephanie Gowan
She's the 2011-12 student liaison to the Strongsville School Board
Spend a little time with Stephanie and you'll soon discover she's all about education. Not only the important role our city's schools have but getting prepared for post-secondary, too.
She decided to submit an application for the role of student liaison after listening to the morning announcements one day at school. She heard, "if you wanted to make a difference in school and work with adults on the school board, you should apply."
So she completed the paperwork, which included an essay. Once she aced the interview with Superintendent Jeff Lampert, she owned the position.
Besides attending the school board meetings and relaying news to the high school, she'll inform the board of what's happening on Lunn Road.
"This is going to be a great learning experience because I have thought about being on some type of board after I graduate from college that would (center around) economic involvement and business development," said Stephanie, a senior.
This 17-year-old DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) student, who also works two part-time jobs, knows that getting an excellent education and taking it seriously are key to getting ahead.
She advocates the importance for underclassmen to already be thinking about their education beyond high school.
"I wish that college was emphasized earlier in high school. Freshmen and sophomores just aren't thinking about it."
Stephanie recommends checking in with a guidance counselor to stay on track.
The Muraski and Center alum has a bright and shiny future planned. At this point, Stephanie intends to major in business at either The Ohio State University or University of Miami next fall and then plans on attending law school.
Let's meet more students from our town. Strongsville City Schools and Sts. Joseph and John administration, faculty, club advisors and students are encouraged to submit information for “Extra Credit” including upcoming events, photos, etc. Email Sharon Galvan at email@example.com.
