Scene at High School 'Chaotic,' Students Say

Some kids left early; some watched TV; others learned in combined extra-large classes

UPDATED 3:25 P.M.

Students at Strongsville High School said they spent part of the day watching TV or talking with friends as substitutes struggled to teach double-sized classes.

With the 383 members of the Strongsville Education Association out on strike, the Strongsville School District was able to hire only about 140 substitutes to replace them in the buildings.

At the high school, the regular eight periods were condensed into four.

"They combined the AP and the regular math classes, so it was kind of hard -- everyone was at a different point," said one student.

The student said he learned "pretty much nothing" on Monday, saying one of his  substitutes was assigned a class he wasn't qualified to teach.

"After 15 minutes, he let us do whatever we wanted, so we watched TV," the student said.

The district had already decided that the subs would teach only core classes like English and math, with classes like art and music canceled.

School Board President David Frazee said he, too, heard that not all classes went smoothly at the high school.

"I guess like anything else, it's going to take some time for things to settle down," he said.

But he said the district continues to hire substitutes so that most classrooms will eventually be covered.

He said his son had "a very successful experience" in AP English on Monday, "and he even has homework, but surprised me."

One student who did not attend school today posted on the Strongsville Patch Facebook page that he had been receiving text messages from his friends at the high school.

"School Updates Here: Over 65 kids in one class. No seats so people are sitting on the floor. Periods are doubled and no learning is there (No assignments, no work) Teacher isn't even in one classroom. Glorified study halls. Kids are saying they aren't coming tomorrow. Wow," the student posted.

Another woman posted: "Not sure what to do. I have two daughters in the High School and one has been sitting on the floor doing nothing. My other daughter is in a class that she doesn't belong in. ... I SUPPORT THE BOE and want my kids in school but sitting on the floor for hrs. seems wrong."

She later updated her post after learning students could leave early if their parents came to pick them up: "They are staying. Just talked to them and they are fine."

WKYC-TV 3 reported that, according to students, the situation in the high school is "chaotic," with kids gathered in large rooms watching TV and playing cards.

Groups of students walked out of the high school this morning.

The SEA, meanwhile, has posted a Wall of Shame on its Facebook page, with photos of substitutes as they went to the police station to apply for jobs on Sunday.

The photos were taken as a large crowd of teachers shouted "scab" and other insults at the would-be subs as they walked into the building Sunday.

The SHS student who spoke with Strongsville Patch said although he had heard rumors that criminals and pedophiles would be hired to sub, he did not feel the school was an unsafe environment.

"There were administrators all over the place," he said

The Teachers created this CHOAS, that is the point of a UNION = 100% MASS REVOLT! They easily could have continued to stay on the job ("the kids are worth it" mantra), and collected their VERY lucrative pay & benefits, aka $79K/year + an extra 10% free money towards awesome pensions. Teachers pay needs/must adjust according to CURRENT times, aka Off-shoring & decimation of the middle-class, including most other Union kind. Why do people think employers off-shored manufacturing, tele-marketing, etc. = UNION inflexability! My child is 100% effected by this situation, but I stand for what is objectively right, not putting my SELF-interest first. It takes time for Admin to solve the CHAOS created by the Teachers UNION. Example: Teachers at Saint Ignatius, a MUCH better school in ALL ways, has NO UNIONS, TOP-notch Teachers, and the Teachrs make MUCH LESS PAY! Humm ...

The truth as observed on site by myself, as well as my children: SEA Teachers demonstrate that their behavior is inconsistent, childish and offensive, aka their actions are those of BULLIES! Continually standing in front of parent cars exiting the parking lot, calling Subs, aka people trying to make a living names, and worse defaming their character! Such harasement, comes from their FEAR of loosing their good jobs that they have choosen to walk away from (as well as walking away from the Students), and their SELHISHNESS as to extorting the public for salaries & benefits that the public can no longer afford to pay due to the significant change in America's economic landscape over the last 30 years. Walking out in mass is one thing, but pathetic behavior is absolutely unnecessary!

Apparently continuing education classes for teachers do not include classes on image building. I heard one student said this would be the worst day of his life!
Wow, I hope he never has to go fight somewhere like Iraq or loses his job and cannot support his family.
I feel bad or those substitute teachers who are just anxious to have a job.
It would be nice if the students would cut them some slack. I mean it is just day one for crying out loud.

Unless I missed it, I haven't found very many posts backing the teachers in their decision to abandon their students.
I think these teachers need to break out of the bubble they live in and see the reality of our economic times.
And as for the "chaos" going on in the classrooms, maybe some of these students should grow up and show some respect. These are not "SCABS", they are teachers.

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions
Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes.
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

I'm not going to lie, it's nice to live "on top of the mountain" as some call it, financially sheltered from the heaviest of economic storms, but I do feel for the kids here and truly commend the ones that are going to class and making the best of the situation...giving the board time to get the proper personnel in. For the ones like that bratty kid that kept updating her "armageddon-esque" scenario DURING class, you'll learn later in life why you should have sided with the fiscally sane members of Strongsville. Good luck selling your "exotic bath soaps" and "gadget helicopters" at your mall kiosk in the future.

I feel sorry for all of the residents of Strongsville, who have had their tax dollas EMBEZZALED by a pack of CLASSLESS TRASH. I personally think your community should FIRE ever employee who did not show up for work and replace them with graduates from Cleveland State, BW, or Notre Dame College. This way the jobs would go to QUALIFIED teaching professionals who really want to work.

Another reality about teaching is that it only takes a 2nd grade education to teach the first grade. So what is the current pay scale for a second grader?

I am sorry to hear that. As mentioned, I leave for St. Barts on Wednesday, and I have room for 20 people. We can come back in 5 years to the desolate waistland that was our home town. It will be up to us to rebuilt from the dirt up. Let's just hope the chaos doesn't spread to the Islands. It could, but I think everyone will be safe down there.

As was very blatantly displayed today, CandidResident has 21 years of indentured servitude left until the debt has been repaid. Now I know that good help is hard to find, but I cannot approve of you attempting to "poach" my workers before I have received what I rightfully deserve.

There are obviously many other people on this board of "serf" status, all of whom are destined to a life of toiling in hot, dusty fields..."Amazed," "Bob S.," "Patty" and "Reality" stand out among many others. Take your pick, but hands off my crop.

My sincere apologies. Candidresident is all yours. I can't help but feel Candidresident's attitude is a direct result of self-realization that things never really panned out for them. The only thing Candid is good at is consistently losing. Arguments, success, keeping their cholesterol down....

A big kudos to the teacher who crossed the line today....and the ones who will follow. It only takes one. That, and a cycle without pay. It had to be tough and take guts, and that teacher should be supported by the entire community. I for one am happy to buy dinner and a bottle of Screaming Eagle for him/her.

They should eliminate the Union, and I am sure that most of it's members will still be glad to work for $60K/year, a matching 401K, and solely health insurance, and if not them, then many others! If this were to occur, then the Teachers would still be paid as valued professionals, without the taxpayer having to pay for OLD-fashioned vision, dental, life insurance, and pen$ions, like the VAST majority of humanity.

My daughter is a student at the high school and she had a great day today after being somewhat hesitant to attend. She had Econ with a sub that she felt was more than qualified and extremely pleasant. He is a graduate from Akron U and is awaiting his bar exam results. She then had English where she was assigned an in- class writing assignment, on to pre-calc where she was very impressed with her sub and I'll quote my daughter, "My precalc teacher is great. We got notes and picked up right where we left off before the strike. She used to teach math so she is intelligent and easily handles leading the classroom.". She finished the day with AP Gov. For the kids that are claiming it was chaos, I suspect they are students that are enjoying the opportunity to take advantage of the situation. My daughter did say that many kids were being uncooperative. I am confident that my child will continue to learn. She's looking forward to tomorrow.

Greetings Gail -
My children unfortunately had the same experience as to poor behavior from the majority of their class-mates. This is clearly an example of their being uncomfortable with the changes, aka Chaos, that the UNIONIZED Teachers choose to subjected them to. As well, it is a shame that the apple does not fall far from the tree, and that the misbehaving students, like their parents, are acting subjectively, out of self-interest. Being objective, and putting one's self in other people's shoes, is always the best place to come from. I have put myseld in the shoes of the Teachers, the modern-day taxpayer, and as a parent, and ultimately it is clear that the Teachers, like most public employees, need to adjust their compensation down, and in-line with those of us in the private sector, who are the ones who's incomes they live off of!

I think it is pittiful that the teachers stirred up the teen aged students who were of the type looking to get out of doing their classwork - if the reports are real at the high school. It is irresponsible of the teachers to use students like this. As a parent I would have sat my child down and explained to them that I expect them to work with the situation; bring home their books and we would work it out until this disagreement between the board and the teachers is over. It's like a divorce. Two sides are fighting, but the kids do not need to be involved in the middle. They need to be protected from it - very bad on the part of the teachers to say anything to the students regarding their issues with their employer.

How can a teacher teach anti bullying to students and then bully others themselves. Terrible example.

I hope every parent sits their child down and explains that this is an issue between the teachers and the board and that the kids are expected to behave as they are in school to learn - not be used as pawns in someone elses propaganda. Leave the kids out of it.

All this strike is doing apparently is creating other problems. Cops are all over the place so I imagine they got extra men/women on, costing more tax payer dollars, right? You're standing near businesses people want to get into in order to do a simple errand, and you're scaring them away, AND I actually talked with parents at my son's play group today who were really worried and distraught on how their older kids are making out at school. Do you NOT see the ripple effect it's causing on the community? I moved here SPECIFICALLY for the affordable taxes and "excellent rated school district" because back where I lived, I couldn't afford it! $2800 a year is a DREAM compared to the $10,000 I was paying in the WORST rated school district in my old state, and now I feel like I wanna bury my head in the damn sand.

Don't give me this self righteous crap about how you "practically raise our kids". Simple solution? I'll never send my kids when it's time and do the job myself. Put you out of the job. Then what use are you? (You see that reaction? Did you really like what I said? Because I didn't like saying it, only because I close friends who are teachers and are truly genuine people and wouldn't deserve that comment).

And subs are not all THAT bad. Some CHOOSE to be a sub because they can only manage part time work - could be because they have kids on their own and can't afford full time day care - you don't know their story.

This is absolutely ridiculous. This bullying of subs should not be tolerated. How can these Strongsville teachers go back to the classroom and be effective after all this? Their students have seen and heard how they've behaved...like irrational imbeciles. Do as I say, not as I do? They have lost so much respect, from students and parents alike. And no, teachers, they are not your jobs anymore. You CHOSE to walk out on your job. You want it back? You care about the kids? Then get your ass back to class and be thankful you have a good job! ANY job for that matter! Hey, I work for the government. Ever hear of a furlough? I am on the verge of being FORCED to take one day off per pay period, maybe two, with NO pay, through September! FORCED! And you know what? I have yet to complain. EVERYONE is being asked to tighten their belts. Why should the Strongsville teachers be any different? So while I'm being forced to readjust my budget to make ends meet, I'm supposed to happily hand over more taxes so that you get bonuses for perfect attendance? WHAT? Uh, being at work is your job!~ Why should you get a bonus for that? (Oh, gosh, don't get me started.) And guess what teachers? Your legs are not chained to any chair. You are welcome to quit and go find a job in another school district that will treat you better. No one is forcing you to stay in a job with such horrible pay and benefits. Go. Please.

My Center student commented on how impressed he was with his science sub who has his PHD, a retired teacher who cares about the kids giving his time. Fact is he is over qualified, but that won't stop the teachers outside screaming and calling him a SCAB! Well, I want to tell this man and all the other subs THANK YOU!
I continue to tell my children their education belongs to them and they can not allow striking teachers to steal it! I wish the high school students that caused the chaos today would understand it is all what they make it. Yes it will take time to settle in but creating chaos does not help anyone and only hurts you as a student!

Sounds like some of the substitute teachers are better than the teachers on strike. As for the teachers shouting insults and blocking parents cars (see above comment), if this is true, than the police need to be brought in. If the teachers or protestors are truly blocking parents cars, that is a genuine safety issue and they need to be removed from the property!

As for the teachers on strike who are behaving so horrifically, why would any parent want their child in a classroom with a person who behaves so badly! Sadly, there are good, wonderful teachers who genuinely care about kids, but if the teachers, or those appearing to represent them, continue acting this way, I don't see how they will ever recover their their relationship with the parents or the community. And good luck ever getting a school levy to pass.

Simply, we should not have to put our students on lockdown. They are young but should be mature enough to deal with the minimal adversity this is causing. Running around and screaming is not acceptable behavior. Students, start acting like responsible adults, and take whatever steps are necessary to bring calm to the chaos. This is an education in itself.

While in school today and this week, why don't you all do that? Research the BoE budget issues, teachers pay, what the contract proposal versus counter-proposal are. Do the actual math. This can be your math assignment. Then write a paper on it. A 5,000 word essay explaining the BOE position, the SEA position and then concluding with your position on the issue and why you think that way. This can be your English assignment. We've now covered Reading, Math, and English. You will be graded on your thoroughness of research, so make sure and include sources, which much be reliable and credible. You also will be graded on your discussion and analysis of the economical issues at hand (now Ecomomics is covered). More is more so feel free to write more than 5,000 words, but you will be graded on quality, not quantity. Ok, I think the high school has enough to stay busy for awhile and to receive a sufficient education in the short term while the grown ups solve these problems. Situation solved! The paper is due Monday so you better get busy. Ready, set GO!

In reality, I realize they will say this is too sensitive of an issue, but in all seriousness, pick such an issue, assign it out and get them all to work. Heck, pick the current Sequestration. Give them a few topics to pick from. This isn't that hard. BURY the little kiddies in an unreasonable deadline for such an assignment and things will get quiet and serious real quick. Inundate them with math problems simultaneously. It's not that hard of a formula to get them under control. I doesn't matter if it is work that is below them as it relates to math. Everyone needs to the practice. Print off 1,000 baseline Algebra problems.

Best post of the day...and probably the week when it's all said and done.

(Part 1) I am a junior at the high school and the sole reason my parents choose to move to Strongsville was for the schools (it is a 45 minute drive to my dad's work everyday so trust me when I say we had plenty of other options). After just three years I can say that I am proud to be a Strongsville student. I love my school and I love the amazing teachers and guidance councelors I am blessed to be surrounded by everyday. In these three short years, they have made such an impact in my life, helping me to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and just as a person in general. It makes me sad to hear people ripping them apart, calling them the "scum of the earth". I attended school on Monday and I want to clarify: absolutely no learning took place. The first class I attending was chemistry (the honors version of which I successfully took last year with an amazing teacher). There were people sitting on the floor, on the tables, on each others laps... Our sub barely spoke English. And I sat there for an hour and a half while we TALKED (about anything and everything besides chemistry). Today instead of wasting another day, I went and stood out with my teachers for almost four hours. In that time, they were all totally respectful and well mannered. Many of the people who drive by however were not.

(Part 2) This got kind of off topic, but what I wanted to address in his post was what some people were saying to "proud daughter of a teacher". I am going to try and remain as polite as possible because what I am really thinking is not appropriate for the Internet. Your "resolutions" of a 5000 word essay infuriates me because it shows how little you obviously care. Our teachers put SO much free time in planning lessons, grading tests and essays, staying after school for extra help, ect. This is not a debate of whether or not the teachers deserve more or less money, but they DESERVE respect. Now here is your assignment for the day. My mom taught me this when I was little but I guess you missed out. If you can't say anything nice, shut your fucking mouth.

On Monday, do you remember what period it was when the trumpets began to blast and the Heavens shook from above? When brimstone rained down upon the school parking lot and and the creek near the high school parted, allowing students to cross to the other side? Did you forget that part of the day because of your tragic, horrific experience? I do hope you are ok..I cannot imagine the psychological damage you have sustained. You must be the one they speak of...that made it out of Armageddon (also known as 3.4.13).

Myron was that before or after
This school is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions
Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes.
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

Myron Shibley-
There must be a misunderstanding here because nowhere in my post did I describe a "tragic" or "horrific" experience (I reread it to make sure). At worst my experience was chaotic (like this article describes hmm that's funny...). Thanks for your concern though! I am actually not okay and I won't be until the teachers are back where they belong in the classrooms with us. It is nice to see concerned citizens though acting as role models for developing minds like my own :) Have a nice day!

No child, you apparently missed the entire point. The POINT is, that you get out of life what you put into it. See, you also learned absolutely nothing by choosing to walk the street all day and socialize. If your education is truly what you are concerned about at this point, you can take books to read to broaden your minds. The library is full of them. You have literature books your reading teacher handed out and sent home. Start reading them of your own free will. Your brain won't combust if you read them twice. You can open your math book and read the lessons and do your best with the new material, or review the old. It will only make you better prepared for your teacher's return, and college. Take initiative. Be a leader. It only benefits YOU. Turn lemons into lemonade. Instead, you CHOOSE to waste this time. You're choosing to follow, follow some adults with their own personal agenda that has nothing to do with you and isn't going to do anything to benefit YOU and YOUR future. Broaden YOUR mind and take care of YOURself. Because in a year, thoae teachers arw out of your lives either way.

That was my point to your friend. Please. Let's face. You kids are using this as an excuse to be lazy and play, and the teachers played on that teenage propensity. In the end, the only one that gets hurt by it is YOU. Rise above it, show your maturity ans leadership capabilities and get back to work!

We did not waste time! I wouldn't have learned anything sitting in study hall seeing as they don't offer six of my classes.

I did take initiative today- I stood out in the cold and froze my ass off standing up for something I believe in. If I really wanted to be lazy and play, I would have stayed home not stood on the corner smiling to rude people flipping me off or spent three hours yesterday backing cookies and making signs. My education IS what I truly care about and how dare you say otherwise. I however also care about my teachers who have dedicated countless lunch and planning periods helping me catch up on material I didn't understand, spent time listening to me cry when I found out my aunt had cancer, and spent their own money to buy food, party supplies, and materials for projects or activities to help us learn. Also, if all you have to do on a Tuesday is bully teenagers, well then the joke is on you.

well student you can make all the signs you want but when the strike lines need to be reinforced with school kids ...most of them cutting school (go ahead repeat your grade again) it shows me that the teachers do not even have the support of the community ..where are the service workers, UAW, teamsters, police and fire, no other unions sending help .........if the police went on strike thousands would show up in support ....what are the teachers getting ....truant kids

Student,

I won't be drawn into an argument, with a student. At your age, it is natural to be drawn to something you believe will add purpose to your life. When I was your age, some kids got really into Amnesty International, and thought they were going to change the world (it's a noble cause mind you). But you are misguided into thinking this is your "cause". Do yourself a favor, print your posts here, and pull them out in 20 years. You will likely find yourself on the opposite end of an issue like this. You are a pawn in a situation where one side if fighting to maintain a lifetstyle that is no longer economically possible based on the current economic environment.

Best of luck...but try to not screw up a a school a year over this. Get to class.

Don't you adults have better things to do than staying on the internet and arguing with teenagers all day when you know you're in the wrong?

Not being a bully Student and Daughter. Because you and other kids are so emotionally drawn into this by some irresponsible adults thar have violated their duty to you, I'm trying to sternly snap you out of it and get you to see that you need to take care of yourself, kind of like an intervention of sorts. Anything but a bully, though it may seem that way now. Consider it "tough love" for all the misguided kids, becauae I am most angry about the adults taking advantage of you.

Like someone above said. Save this for 20 uears from now and see what you think then. Perhaps your own kids will go through a strike. I did as a kid, and by the way, my teachers acted with the utmoste professionalism, even according ro my parents who disagreed with their demands. Your "wonderful" teachers, I have no doubt they did everything you said. But now they are using you and manipulating you for their own personal gain at your personal expense. Take care of YOU! Kids picketing is not making a dent in their cause anyway. I promise you, my only concern is you and your friends, which is more than your teachers are presently concernes about.

The adults did not draw is into this. We are with the teachers because WE believe it is the right thing to do. No adults told us to go, we decided for ourselves. I will fully support my teachers because I believe they are right and I believe the school board should come up with a better contract.

Just a quick comment before I remove myself from this negativity. While it is very heroic of you to play our guardian angels, I have to parents of my own (who evidently believe teachers get paid too much and are against the strike... don't worry, I'm not just a little brainwashed child). Also, I think I have heard about every different viewpoint on this matter and while I respect the rest, I have chosen my own and would appreciate, if not respect, the decency from others to let me form my own opinions.

As a SHS senior and student that was present the first day of the strike at Strongsville High School I can say that the "chaos" that was going on was mostly created by the students. It was sad to see that 15,16,17, and even 18 year olds were acting like complete children in the midst of this. The administration was doing the best they could. If students could've stopped yelling and started to act their age for once much of the so called "chaos" would have ceased. Unfortunately too many of us were focused on tweeting or putting things on instagram hoping to get our 5 minutes of fame. Seeing how twisted things have been portrayed by the media over the past few days really makes you question what else is told to us with a tainted view.

That is phenomenal. Congratulations to the students of SHS for proving that they are in fact more mature than their teachers. I'm proud of you guys. Hang in there and give the subs and the administration a little more time - they have a lot of educational sabotage to overcome.

As for you former teachers standing around outside instead of doing your jobs - the Internet really sucks for you, doesn't it? It used to be that you could thug your way to a another fat contract with lies and intimidation, and now everything's exposed for the world to see. Really makes it tough on you. My condolences on the impending demise of your little labor struggle.
