Strongsville's Major Projects for 2013
Next year's budget includes roadwork, improvements at rec center
Strongsville will buy vehicles and firefighting equipment, improve an intersection and renovate part of the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center next year.
The projects are included in the 2013 budget, which got its first review by City Council last week.
Some of the major projects and purchases:
• Widening the traffic-snarling intersection of Albion and Prospect roads. It will cost about $1.5 million.
• Painting the walls and replacing the floor in the gym at the rec center, at a cost of about $200,000. "This is a 15-year-old facility. It needs some work," Finance Director Joe Dubovec said.
"If you look at the walls, it looks like people walked on them," Mayor Tom Perciak agreed.
• Widening Sprague Road from York Road to Webster Road. This is not Strongsville's project, but the city will contribute $644,000 for its share of the cost.
• Buying turnout gear for the Fire Department, at a cost of about $3,000 per firefighter.
• Purchasing two dump trucks for the Service Department, a rescue squad for the Fire Department and 10 police vehicles.
• Upgrading Strongsville's website to allow people to apply for building permits online; estimated cost, $40,000.
• Rehabbing fire hydrants throughout the city by sandblasting and repainting them.

"Widening the traffic-snarling intersection of Albion and Prospect roads. It will cost about $1.5 million."
WOW!
I never knew there was that big of a problem there!
Wonder what business is nearby that might benefit by this? After all, it seems that recently this kind of improvement is for the benefit of some special interest nearby.

I'm guessing that you don't drive near that area often during rush hour when people are trying to get home on the Westwood development side of strongsville, while trying to avoid the traffic snarling intersection of Pearl and Westwood, or Pearl and Albion, or Pearl and Webster?

No I don't. Not during rush hour, when there is heavy traffic all over - I think that is what people expect to find during "rush hour".
I'm surprised they are spending $1.5 for an intersection. Comparing the total cost for a mile of widening Pearl up the hill to the Boston Rd. intersection and to buy up frontage property is about $12mil. Just seems rather high for a little intersection.
Sooooo, when will our 30 year old side streets and curbs be fixed???

"Special Interest" ??? In our part of town??? Nope, there is nothing real special (to most folk) in our section of town, EXCEPT the wonderful, down to earth people that live here. Until the expansion of our city we were lucky if a police car drove down our street 3 times a year. Now it's about 2 or 3 times a week. HUGH improvement. Thanks Mayor Perciak. We have many new developments and everyone needs to get home. Coop explained it just fine. We ARE part of Strongsville too.

You mean those wonderful new developments that have caused so many sewer problems to people have lived there for years?

Widening intersections and Rec center improvements. I wonder how many feet of sidewalk and storm drains that could buy for city residents. Makes you wonder what the priorities are!
