Strongsville Teachers on the Picket Line: Video

Police clear driveway at high school to keep union members from blocking cars

Strongsville teachers took to the picket lines Monday morning, holding "On Strike" signs in front of school buildings.

At Strongsville High School, police ordered members of the Strongsville Education Association away from the driveway after they failed to get out of the way for an entering vehicle quickly enough.

Outside Center Middle School, the picketers chanted and blew whistles.

Very good point..."Let's go chant "working people power"right after we chose to leave our jobs to mindlessly meander down a sidewalk with signs in our hands." Fools.

It could be the absolute most non-intimidating collection of trash ever assembled to "scare off" subs and anyone "daring" to cross. I would assume by the looks of it, all of them have rides home arranged by Republic Waste.

I love the "We love you kids!" when the bus rolls by. Awww...those SEA teachers are so sweet! I mean, the 20,000 other things they are doing that are detrimental to the kids were completely nullified when you guys yelled that at the bus.

Yes, kids it's not about your education anymore; its all about your teacher's pay, healthcare and pension benefits. You can forget about their role as educators, mentors and role models, that's simply not on their list of priorities.

Just got a message from my kid in school. Said his Sub-teacher seems to have actually taken a bath this morning and seems to be in control of things - despite all the noisy, spoiled job-less teachers milling outside his school. I'm sure the subs will work out just fine for the rest of the year. After all, the curriculum does the teaching, the teachers only act as facilitators - as proved by the success of Onine K-12 instructional design and their top-notch curriculum(s).

I think it is hilarious that the teachers are not following the rules and that the police had to repeatedly tell them to "back off the apron, now please". It shows the intellegence level of the Strongsville Teachers! What idiots! Who is leading this strike? This is exactly why I send my kids to private, so I know they are getting a higher quality education while these losers waste my tax dollars!

I walked my son to elementary school this morning. As we were coming down the street, you could hear them yelling at the school bus bringing in kids, yelling at cars. As we approached, they got quiet and parted for us to pass. For at least that I thank them, but...Was that because they all knew me? I do not know. My husband is a retired Ford union man. Union and right to strike are one thing. Yet he says that not even Ford workers behaved this way when on strike back in 1976. This is the problem: the children are seeing your outbursts. If they display your behavior, they will get into trouble. You know you would never tolerate this from them in your classrooms! Stop setting a negative example. My son saw his teacher participating in this way this morning. He commented on it as we went into school. Not cool people! And before someone says something to me like, "@#$%....you should have kept him home so he wouldn't have seen that...". I do not believe I should have to keep my child out of school, so as not to see teachers behaving badly. Welcome to the dose of reality. Life isn't always pretty. We don't always get our way. Sometimes we have to make hard decisions. Husband and I both feel that it is in some sense a life lesson they should be in on. Life in a bubble isn't healthy. Let's just have a mutual respect while disagreeing. Who knows. Perhaps if we calm down and listen to each other, we may come to an understanding. Whatever happened to it being all about the kids?

I stopped by the paper recycle bin in the HS student parking lot as I usually do. Lots of people holding signs, but very quiet, (there was a police officer not 50 feet from me). What caused me to look up was a honking horn and a car going by, windows down, and at least three hands out the window giving the one finger salute. Since I didn't know the car or driver, I will not speculate on who was inside, but I can tell you what they thought of the strikers. Just a little FYI, as Bill Wills would say.

Neil Gordon, you are a horse's a$$. Certainly all of those things are on the teachers priority list. The teachers simply decided that after being generous doormats for 6 years they had no choice but to make their life's, family's and carereer's a higher priority for a little while.

Do you always but your job ahead of yourself and your family? Is it always work first in your life?

When people get angry they behave badly. That the truth. The teachers have demonstrated that and the pro-union side has demonstrated that.

And that's why the big loser in this is our community.

The behaviors of these union teachers demonstrate the impressionability and obedience of people when provided with a legitimizing ideology and social and institutional support (from their union leadership and each other). Anyone remember the "Stanford Prison Experiment" from 1971 (if not, Google it)? This experiment shed some light on how quickly sane and rational individuals could lose their sanity and rationality when placed into an environment of group approval and downward-spiralling behaviors (similar to a mob whipped into a frenzy).
I think this teacher's strike is going to put a "black eye" on our community for a long time to come. Twenty years from now, we'll be able to point to 04 March 2013 as the starting point for the erosion of a great little town.

Anyone who thought that today was going to go off without a few hiccups is delusional. I will say the Elementary school was going great. Plenty of kids and everyone was in good spirits. The principal was awesome. There are a lot of people that need to be replaced. There are a lot of people who were just hired into a new system. How about we give the Board the time they need to improve things? I am confident things are definitely going to improve. To judge the Board's success just on today is ridiculous and anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that. I prepared my children for the fact that things will take time. Life is messy sometimes. I would rather my children be prepared to deal with change rather than be locked up at home.

Wonderful parenting advice. I hope we have other parents and residents out there who have the credidentials to teach and need a job apply for these jobs. I agree it will take time to replace them all for what I fear may be a long strike. I think the board needs to stay strong and hold their ground. Nothing in their proposal seemed unreasonable to me.

Despite the efforts at sabotage by the former teachers, I predict that within two weeks it will be "business as usual". By two months, it will be "business better than usual". By next school year, after a summer of hiring highly motivated, dedicated, and qualified teachers, it will be "best thing that has ever happened to our schools". I'd love to see our former teachers come back to where they started out (years ago) before it is to late for them. As individuals, most of you are way better than this behavior, as a union mob, you aren't better than this.

My daughter is a student at the high school and has had a better than expected day today. She had Econ with a sub that she felt was more than qualified and extremely pleasant. He is a recent graduate from Akron U and is awaiting his bar exam results. She then had English where she was assigned an in class writing assignment, on to pre-calc where she was very impressed with her sub and I'll quote my daughter, "My precalc teacher is great. We got notes and picked up right where we left off before the strike. She used to teach math so she is intelligent and easily handles leading the classroom.". She'll finish the day with AP Gov. For the kids that are claiming it's chaos, I suspect they are students that are enjoying the opportunity to take advantage of the situation. My daughter did say that many kids were being uncooperative. I am confident that my child will continue to learn.

Teachers: It's time to "cut bait". You just don't have the necessary position of strength to "bargain" in this manner at this time. Reality1: You are not irreplacable, but you are our neighbors and we're willing to forgive if you pull back now. Reality2: If this ends up with you permanently losing your jobs (do you understand the possibility of this?), most of you will never find as good of a job again in your lifetime. You old teachers might not care, but all the teachers with kids at home are in the process of killing the goose that laid the golden eggs!

About time these teachers face the facts. There are other people wandering this earth with teaching degrees just like you that would love the opportunity to do something they love to do. It seems to me that the current teachers are protecting "their" turf. What they dont realize is that, that so called turf is not theirs, its the communities. We allow them to teach in our city. If you dont like the conditions, or the pay or the benefits....you can leave. Someone will replace you in a second. And since that teacher is new, they are going to go out of their way to impress those students, the principal, the board and the other teachers. Do you really want a 30 year veteran teaching english for the 30th time going through the motions just counting the days until that first STRS check comes in the mail? Or do you want a new, vibrant, hungry teacher willing to go the extra mile?

I was at an elementary school today as well and while it is a little chaotic we survived. With about 70% of the children attending the classes were crowded. The principal met us at the door and invited us in to met the subs. Once the kids went to class the floor was opened to questions. The top question from the parents, "How long do the teachers have to be on strike before we can fire them?" Parents are not happy and are losing what little sympathy they had for the teachers and their lack of fair compensation

We were also told they believe the strike will go much longer than expected because OEA is picking up Cobra payments, and this has turned into more than just Strongsville striking. Also all of our subs were real teachers they have degrees in education and everything, all of them actually have taught in elementary. The principal provide the subs names along with the ode site where we could check their credentials.

Did anyone know that the many of the teachers cleaned their desks out well over a week ago and started their propaganda with the kids then. I know that some of the teachers did not want to strike and I hope they will return to class soon. I am done with supporting the teachers anymore after seeing them on the news and hearing from people at school, they make me ashamed to say I am from Strongsville.
I would like to see some parents up at the admin. offices to protest the strike.
I have looked for a job for over a year and finally got one making only 70% of what I make before I lost my job. WHERE'S THE GRATITUDE?

They can't eventually return to work and expect things to ever be the same, can they? And, to be fair, there's a group of ringleaders calling the shots here. Not everyone picketing is lacking class. Some are simply pulling their assigned picket shift so they can qualify for strike pay whenever that kicks in.

I heard on TV that 1 teacher crossed the picket line.
Hats off to her!
I wish more teachers would follow her example.

And I just don't get why others don't.
If the teachers feel they are taking a pay cut and this contract being proposed is worse than before, then why would they strike and give up the pay and benefits they currently have? After all, once the previous contract expired, they are still covered by the terms of that - they really are not without a contract, its just the old one continuing. Kinda like a month to month lease after your years lease expires. Why do you think they have been working since the beginning of school year without a whimper until now?

Again - I give it one missed pay period and the floodgates will open. Won't that be embarrassing? Time is not on the side of the membership. Most people I know simply cannot afford to skip pay periods. I suspect they cannot either.

The ones who will slowly be coming back in will be the good teachers - they will have no problem being evaluate or the merit system. Its the bad teachers who will hold out until the end - they just want to continue doing as little as needed to get by.

doesn't sound right though. I don't recall a male Kindergarten teacher in the district. Especially one who is retiring. Either they got the gender wrong, or the grade level.

From what I've seen in the media and what I've endured getting in and out of the school driveway, I don't think I want them back save a select few. I feel if they would stoop so low as to behave as they did yesterday and today as well as post a wall of shame with photos of the subs, I would not put it past them to retaliate against my kid. About that "No Bullying" Policy -

Are teachers exempt from the anti-bullying policy?
Or is their harassment, intimidation, and bullying acceptable because they are teachers, but the students should not follow the example that the teachers have set.

This is from the Districts website -
Regarding :
POLICY 5517.01
BULLYING AND OTHER FORMS OF AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR

"At least semi-annually, the Superintendent shall provide to the President of the Board a written summary of all reported incidents and post the summary on the District web site (if one exists).
The list shall be limited to the number of verified acts of harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying, whether in the classroom, on school property, to and from school, or at
school-sponsored events. Allegations of criminal misconduct and suspected child abuse will be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency and/or to Child Protective Services in accordance with statute. District personnel shall cooperate with investigations by such agencies."

Looks like the teachers should know this type of activity is not tolerated.

I came across this below that was written for the teachers to follow, sounds like the outline for many of the comments on here, doesn't it??

Attention everyone! To get the word out to the Strongsville community and support our teachers, please write a letter to the editor to the Strongsville Post. Here are some notes to keep in mind when writing the letter:
-No name calling. Tensions are running high, but we need to be diplomatic to get our point across. Critiquing is allowed.
-Try to keep the letter related to the economy, cuts/sacrifices teachers have taken, extra duties taken, how much time & effort teachers put in (it’s not just 180 days & 7 hrs/day), what will be lost if teachers are negatively impacted by unfair contract (letters of rec/extra cirrics/support etc)
-Definitely include how teachers have positively impacted you and your future
-Be personal (emotional stories are effective) but also make sure to include the subject of education and how students and the community will be affected because the focus of the opposition is salary & benefits
-Before submitting, have someone look over the letter to offer suggestions for any revisions and any additions/subtractions.

If SHS is in such chaos, maybe it's because they are being the disrepectful teenagers that they are nowadays. Maybe they should show some respect to the substitutes. No one likes what is going on, but we all don't have to be so hateful. None of us are being good role models at this point. And as far as healthcare and wages and having more help...try working for the county-no cost of living increase for 8 years and we keep paying out more and more for our healthcare, and yes we are paid by the taxpayers dollars also. But guess what, take what you get or go find a job elsewhere. We are reminded daily that we should all be glad that we have a job!

Sheer brilliance from the kids, that know nothing about these adult issues but let their minds be brainwashed by propaganda instead of actually READING and educating themselves on the issues, if they were actually so concerned and interested.

While in school today and this week, why don't you all do that? Research the BoE budget issues, teachers pay, what the contract proposal versus counter-proposal are. Do the actual math. This can be your math assignment. Then write a paper on it. A 5,000 word essay explaining the BOE position, the SEA position and then concluding with your position on the issue and why you think that way. This can be your English assignment. We've now covered Reading, Math, and English. You will be graded on your thoroughness of research, so make sure and include sources, which much be reliable and credible. You also will be graded on your discussion and analysis of the economical issues at hand (now Ecomomics is covered). More is more so feel free to write more than 5,000 words, but you will be graded on quality, not quantity. Ok, I think the high school has enough to stay busy for awhile and to receive a sufficient education in the short term while the grown ups solve these problems. Situation solved! The paper is due Monday so you better get busy. Ready, set GO!

I am tired of hearing "get a real job" as if teaching isn't? If they have it so good and it isn't a real job, why isn't everyone taking the easy way out and being teachers? My husband is a teacher. He left his first career to go back to school to get his license, not for the money (he makes less than half of what he did), not for the benefits (at 44 he will not have the years in AND he won't be able to collect social security even though he paid into it for 22 years AND he is on my medical because it is BETTER AND CHEAPER than his), not for the union, not for the hours (he works longer hours than I do), and not for the summers off (because he uses that time to stay up on his continuing education requirements) he does it because of the kids. He is an elementary teacher and the kids truly enjoy his goofy sense of humor, but he works. It's a real job with real demands, real stresses (how many of you have 7 year olds asking you to be their daddy because their real daddy left them?) He cleans poop and pee of the floor because parents can't wait to send their kids off to full day kindergarten even though the are not ready. He calls parents about concerns with children and their response is: "I don't have time for this, you deal with him." I could go on and on. And that isn't even the true demands of the job! It's sad. How much should a teacher make? What benefits should they get? And how do they answer these questions? The lack of respect for teachers is AMAZING.

Lizzie-
If he worked 22 years in the private sector, he has enough credits and HE WILL get social security, but there is a formula because it is considered a WINDFALL
Per the Social Security Administration-
"If you work for an employer who does not withhold Social Security taxes from your salary, such as a government agency or an employer in another country, any pension you get based on that work may reduce your Social Security benefits.
The Windfall Elimination Provision affects how the amount of your retirement or disability benefit is calculated if you receive a pension from work where Social Security taxes were not taken out of your pay. A modified formula is used to calculate your benefit amount, resulting in a lower Social Security benefit than you otherwise would receive."

As far as needing summers off to get his continuing education, other professionals that work 12 months have to do this during their free time, nights and weekends.

You husband should not have to deal with some of the "absent parents". And, I'm sure he is a very hard working teacher.
But so are those in the private sector who have been hit with economic difficulties that our nation has been dealing with since 2007 - and families in Strongsville are not exempt from those difficulties. It is just a reality we have all had to adjust to and one that the teachers need to as well, regardless of if one thinks they should get a raise or not.

I think you have noticed that the respect for teachers quickly eroded once they started acting like spoiled brats having a tantrum, with the first Board meeting they marched on and things escalated after that.
Up until then, the discussion was not about respecting teachers - it was what people consider fair pay and benefits, and I think all should agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

And John, we are not for the union. In fact, my husband would love to get rid of the union. And there is no free 401K. PERS is a pension he is required to pay into (more than our federal income tax) and the district contributes a percentage as well. He also would be for a longer work year because he feels he doesn't have enough time in 9 months to do what is expected of him, but you would have known that if you asked instead of assuming.

what a lot of people are forgetting is that pension pickup option instead of the raise back in the 90s is not what was actually given at the time
back in the 90s a top scale teacher made around 40,000.00 which put that raise (4+3+3) or 10.2% pension pickup at about 4300.00 ...the problem is that it did not stay at 4300.00 it kept growing with every new contract which it now sits for the top scale 80,000.00 teachers at 8600.00 or doubled what it was given at, and to the credit of the NEW superintendent noticed this and...... it is now going to get removed
these teachers should be very fortunate that the offer to convert that into a 9.2% addition to their salary instead of the 4300.00 from the 90s rate which it was meant as

Its hard to respect the STRONGSVILLE teachers after the way they have behaved.

Its like they all watched some old movie where these big burly, beer guzzling guys got vocal and rowdy. But, I don't believe I have witnessed this kind of behavior from any union workers - on the news or in the paper - except from teachers.

These are individuals who want to think of themselves as professionals. But, their behavior says otherwise. And, its not a movie and you have lost much of the support you might have had because of your tantrums. Those tantrums you would not tolerate from your children or students. And, would you stand for another adult doing these same things to you, away from this time when you are demanding the BOE to fork over what you want?

Lets say its just a normal time a year from now...
What if someone got in your face say at the grocery store and started yelling at you?
What if a bunch of people just stood around staring at your home for 90 minutes?
What if you were holding a meeting and a bunch of people came in or stood just outside and started yelling and were disruptive?
What if you were at the mall and someone started beating on your car?store
What if a bunch of people wouldn't let you leave a store by forming a barricade?

I guess, Tracy and all, these actions would be perfectly okay with you. You would not have any poor opinion of the ones doing these things.

Lizzie...not sure what exactly you are arguing here. My point was that no person is entitled to anything based on their degree or how much more important they think their occupation is than yours. And more importantly, why on earth should a tax payer be forced to fund 100% of a teachers pension and 90% of their health care cost...AND then also be responsible to cover the entire cost of their own retirement and healthcare on top of it? Please explain to us how this is "fair" without using the word "deserve" bc that is an emotional plea that holds zero argumentative weight. Tell you what, ill be happy to say you are right and teachers don't feel entitled to other ppls money when you and the teachers start contributing to my 401K and my healthcare costs? Does that sound "fair" to you?

Not arguing, just addressing your comment: "Lyn - i do not believe the problem is with people being entitled to their own opinion. I think the real problem is people believing that they are entitled to other people's money."

My comment was about the way it works right now. I don't know about any sense of entitlement to your money as much as entitlement to be paid for their work. You pay property taxes, the taxes go to the schools, and the schools pay the teachers. And they are entitled to be compensated. As far as the benefits, it does seem, if what everyone is saying is true, that they have a rather extensive package. I can understand that frustration.

To your last questions: teachers and everyone else who buys your company's products or services do contribute to your salary and benefits.
