The Strongsville Target store will be among the first in northeast Ohio to offer fresh produce and meat.

Renovations are under way now for the new section, which will offer things like bananas, strawberries, apples, bagged lettuce, potatoes and onions, as well as packaged ground beef, chicken and pork.

The new section will open March 23.

"We're excited about it," said Courtney Majewski, guest services team leader at the Strongsville store.

Majewski said renovations are also under way at the Target in Fairview Park, and all area stores will eventually get a produce section.

A news release from the company says the addition of produce -- which started with a pilot project at two stores in Minnesota in 2008 -- came in response to requests from customers.

"The expanded food layout features a 50 to 200 percent increase in food over what existed prior to the remodels," the release says.

Other sections of the Strongsville Target are also being redesigned. The shoe department has already moved, and other areas will be remodeled.

"They're opening everything up so it looks more inviting," Majewski said. 

The stores also offer a dry, dairy and frozen assortment and convenience foods like snacks and beverages.
