What's the Worst Traffic Signal in Strongsville?
Vent here about your least favorite intersection
We're wondering: What is the least-favorite traffic signal in Strongsville?
Back in February, when officials were compiling a list of the city's most frustrating traffic spots, residents let loose with hundreds of complaints about slow-moving streets and clogged intersection.
Many of those complaints had to do with waiting FOREVER at certain intersections because of the signals -- they're timed to favor cross traffic, the turn arrow isn't long enough, the turn lane is too short, whatever.
If you have a signal that gets you frustrated, let us know in the Comments section below, and we'll pass along the most commonly named intersections to Strongsville officials.
(It only takes about 10 seconds to sign in or to join Patch, so don't let that deter you from leaving your comment).

Turning left off 82 to get to Costco is definitely the worst one I've experienced

Even worse during the Holiday's. Looks like there is room to make 2 turning lanes.

I agree with you Rick. The left turn lane as well as the centermost east bound lane is also affected. In general the intersection of 82 & Howe is the worst.

Amen, Rick and Will. When turn left lane is filled, it backs up 82 eastbound big time. A normal 5 minute ride from Falling Water to I71 N can take up to 30 minutes.

I agree! Shurmer onto Howe is bad. It feels like you wait at least 5-10 minutes before the light finally changes!

Try driving on West 130th and Whitney during rush hour! That area needs major help too!

Turning left from Echo Drive to Pearl - especially when there is no traffic on Pearl during off hours.

the light on Howe at southpark/lenox going south where it reduces from 2 lanes to one after the intersection .... that causes cars to race down the right lane and cut in after the light (ohio revised code 4511 improper lane change ticket offense) that causes the flow of traffic to slow by domino effect ......this is easy to fix, block the right lane after the light so those in the right lane can only turn right into the mall

I refuse to let people merge there, I will run them right up the curb, yes make the right lane a right turn only and end it at the mall, that will stop those who are illegally trying to merge from getting past the intersection (they have 3/4 of a mile to get over)

Turning Left on Pearl coming from The Turnpike. OMG...it is both the longest red light and shortest green light in the history of mankind!!

Agree. It seems like the red light lasts five minutes!

Prospect going North - light at West Lunn. There is no left turn signal and people can't make a left turn until the light goes to caution. You could be there for 10 minutes or more!

Please put a left turn arrow on the light at Pearl (going south) and Cook. It can get so backed up with people turning left into McDonalds and those waiting to turn left onto Cook. Help!!

This should sum it up for me here is my status from the evening of July 3:
I wish The Strongsville Police department would sit in the intersection of Howe and RT 82. When the light turns RED hand any and all idiots still sitting in the intersection a big fat ticket. It's unbelievable!! There are 4 lanes to get out of the shopping center and during rush hour you're lucky if 2 cars total get out. WHY? Because as soon as the light turns yellow as many as 10 cars pull into the intersection, this causes all lanes leaving the shopping center to be blocked. By the time it clears for the cars to go it's red again and the cycle starts all over. I'm not kidding when I say it took us 45 minutes to leave Costco this evening. :(

Going north on Pearl to Rt. 82. The left turn arrow onto Royalton west allows only four cars to go through. Ifffffffffff, a fifth car turns left onto 82, it is on a yellow turning red light.

Kathy, I agree. That is the shortest light in Strongsville. At the maximum, four cars get through anytime of day....but this is ONLY if all 4 cars are diligent and paying attention and really step on the gas! I also agree with everyone else that there are MAJOR traffic problems in Strongsville. Absolutely that little stretch just past the south Howe mall entrance needs to be eliminated. Put a giant concrete barrier just south of that light and make it one lane going south. I too run people off the road who try to jam their car in going 60 miles an hour. But I have also been hit there and the police won't do anything but issue a ticket after the fact. We need the police to target violators on Howe, on 82, etc with a vengence and get people to slow down! Also, when did the stop signs and red lights around town become "optional" ??? I get honked at for making a complete stop going through developments!

I agree! Sometimes it's less than four. There is an additional lane that is whited out; why can't that lane be opened for use?

Turning left from Dake west bound onto Pearl heading north. The timing on the left turn arrow is very long since the Pearl Road widening project was completed.

All great comments on here. I think they can all be broken down into 3 categories...
Category 1- In the works...like fixing the light at Shurmer and Howe
Category 2- Should be considered...like a turning arrow at Cook and Pearl
Category 3- Unfortunately not possible...like an additional left turn arrow at Costco off of Rt. 82 (While it seems like there is room to add another lane because of the lane that is restricted, the intersection itself is not wide enough to handle another turn lane.
Everyone's comments are important to me and I'm sure also to my fellow councilmen. We are always looking for ways to improve our city. Constructive conversation, like above, will help us all to work together to build a stronger Strongsville. If any of you would like to further discuss these issues, feel free to email me at Matt.Schonhut@Strongsville.org

Also...
Please never forget that the traffic signal system is very, very complex. One minor adjustment to a light's timing can change the way the entire rest of the system operates. So while some fixes may seem quick and easy, there is a possible negative domino effect on the whole system for just that one adjustment. It takes a professional to truly understand how the system operates. Keep the suggestions coming, as they will be looked at if they haven't already been. However, please keep in mind the possible domino effect that many of us, including myself, may not initially think of.

Matt please remember that one little 86 year old lady in a big old Gran marquis driving 17 MPH down Pearl Road can mess up any timing of any traffic system

Tom, I think I would prefer the 86 yr old driving 17mph to the countless bozos driving 60mph down Pearl....you know, the ones who think yellow means speed up and red means slam on the gas and gun it! =( Why is everyone in such a big hurry???

Shurmer and Howe! It's a ridiculous wait! I've sat there for more than 10 minutes before finally giving up and turning right, so I can pull into a driveway and turn myself around! Something needs to change!

I realize that my beefs are not with intersections, but traffic issues nonetheless: 1) the people who are headed northbound on Pearl at Falling Water and cross over the double yellow line in order to get into Dairy Queen. No, you're not in "your" turn lane, and no you really don't need more fried food and ice cream. 2) The idiots who park in the fire lane at Giant Eagle at SouthPark in order to "just run in for a couple of things". SPD could have a field day there writing tickets, but I'm sure the brass doesn't want to offend anyone.

The Costco turn light (going Eastbound on 82) and the Shurmer and Howe light....I have been tempted to just go through it so many times and find myself doing an "Austin Powers" back and forth over the line to see if the signal is even working! Lol...those 2 are the worst! As far as the Costco one, I've actually found it to be faster (I know it sounds crazy) to drive through the mall parking lot and turn out into Howe to get to Costco....and speaking of the mall-not a traffic signal problem, but a traffic problem nonetheless...can we trim the bushes down or remove them from the island where inbound traffic enters into the road that goes around the mall? It is so difficult to see the cars to your left (especially if you are in a small car, then it is nearly impossible) until it's too late and they've almost hit you trying to get through the intersection...who plans out these things?

Let's concentrate on pedestrians such as myself for a minute here. The light in front of Center seems to never change from green to red while waiting o and only changes on rare occasion.

I must agree that going east on 82 is not the best way to get to Costco / Best Buy. I use Howe and go straight in. At least when the light changes traffic has a chance. Try to turn left from 82 east bound to Pearl and no joke 4 quick driver max.. Oh ya what is with the west bound left turn traffic on 82 to Pearl... They think they own the intersection !!! Ticket Time there for sure..... I think a 71 to Boston interchange would help the Mall area , Prospect, Pearl ... Bad for the area but the best for the city..
