Baldwin Wallace Student from Brunswick Wins Prestigious Scholarship

Kara Gawelek of Brunswick, a rising senior at Baldwin Wallace University, was one of three scholarship winners at the prestigious 2013 YWCA Women of Achievement Awards ceremony in Cleveland. Gawelek was selected to receive the $1,500 Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award, which recognizes an outstanding female sophomore or junior student who is majoring in a science, engineering or technology-related discipline. She was chosen from more than 40 student nominees from 12 universities.

Gawelek, an aspiring pathologist, who credits her late father with inspiring her to “live up to her potential,” has earned a 3.96 GPA while studying Biology/Neuroscience and Chemistry at BW. The first-generation college student is head ambassador for BW’s Undergraduate Research and Creative Studies Program, vice president of the Pre-Medical Society and a Choose Ohio First STEM Scholar. She also serves on the Leadership Council for BW’s STEM Scholars, an innovative scholarship program to prepare students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Full-time students vying for the Dr. Jennie S. Hwang Award are nominated by staff and faculty at their university; recipients must demonstrate academic performance overall and within one of the designated majors; leadership experiences and on-campus activities; and off-campus volunteer and community service. The $1,500 award was created through the generosity of Dr. Hwang, a recipient of the 2000 Women of Achievement Award. Baldwin Wallace University, founded in 1845, was one of the first colleges to admit students without regard to race or gender.

An independent, coeducational university of 4,500 students, BW offers coursework in the liberal arts tradition in more than 60 academic areas. Located in Berea, 12 miles from downtown Cleveland, BW offers students the cultural, educational and business advantages of a major metropolitan area. Visit www.bw.edu.
