Since Troop 701's first Eagle Scout in 1984, the troop has averaged one Eagle Scout every three months. Nationally, only about 4 percent of the young men who join scouting become Eagles.

The five put in more than 580 hours of community service work to complete their Eagle Scout projects, according to Scoutmaster Scott Horan:

The Cleveland Metroparks system was the beneficiary of Michael’s Eagle Scout project. Under Michael’s leadership, a group of his fellow volunteers extended a dead-end trail into a loop. They also added two bridges in flood-prone areas, erected trail marker signs and cleared the trail of debris. Michael’s project took 204 hours to complete.

Anthony's project helped the Strongsville Backyard Preserve. Under his leadership, volunteers built, mounted and positioned 22 bird nesting boxes. Anthony’s project took 64 hours.

For his Eagle Scout project, Cameron organized and led a book drive to benefit Cleveland-area children through Reach Out and Read at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. A total of 4,500 books were collected at the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center. Cameron said his project would not have been such a big success had it not been for the generous support of the troop and the community. The project took 70 hours to complete.

Cleveland Playhouse was the beneficiary of Adrian’s Eagle Scout project. Using his design, volunteers built a 4-foot-tall puppet theater for use in the Playhouse’s children’s education programs. The puppet theater has a wooden base and a PVC frame that can be disassembled and reassembled by the children. Adrian’s project took 70 hour..

The Strongsville Backyard Preserve was also the beneficiary of Nathan’s Eagle Scout project. Volunteers improved the Oak Leaf Trail by distributing a layer of wood chips on the existing trail. They also constructed a 24-foot boardwalk to protect a marshy area of the trail. Nathan’s project took 172 hours to complete.

Between them, the five newest Eagle Scouts have earned 136 merit badges, they have camped a total of 778 nights, they have hiked 1,162 miles and have personally contributed 692 hours of community service.

They have camped in such amazing venues as the Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Pamlico Seabase in North Carolina, and Oregon.

Boy Scout Troop 701 meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Chapman Elementary School, 13883 Drake Rd.
