Forensic Scientist, Chef Bev, Chinese Music Coming to Library in September

All events  are sponsored by Friends of Strongsville Branch Library.  Customers may also visit the library's website to register and to see more library event information. 

All branches of Cuyahoga County Public Library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day.
Year-Round Story Times
Cuyahoga County Public Library offers story time sessions year-round for children birth to grade 2.  Story Time sessions are back in full swing beginning Sept. 6. Call the Strongsville Branch for program information and more details.

Young at Heart Book Club.  Meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. 
A book club for adults who love children’s and teen books.  Our next discussion will be on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Register in person to pick up a copy of the book The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare.  

Memory Fitness: What You Need to Know.  Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 2-3 p.m.  
If you have complaints of forgetfulness, this program will help you better understand the changes in memory you might be experiencing.  Learn how attitude, lifestyle choices and paying attention impact recall and what you should include in your memory fitness program.

Just 4 U Student Friends Meeting, Saturday, Sept. 10  from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.  Ages 10 – 18.  
Join the Just 4 U Student Friends group and get involved in your library! You can help your library with volunteer projects and other activities. Contact the Teen Librarian or Children's Librarian for an application.

 

SmashCon 11: The Tournament.  Saturday, Sept. 10  from 2-4 p.m.  Grades 6 – 12.  Registration begins on Monday, Aug. 29.
Think you’ve mastered Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Test your skills against other gamers in this county-wide tournament for teens in 6th-12th grade. The top two brawlers from each site will advance to the final championship in North Olmsted on Nov. 12. Will it be Link? Meta Knight? Pikachu? Bring it to SmashCon 11 and own your bragging rights. Are you game? Or game over?


Home Computer Income Opportunities.  Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
Join us as a representative from Tech Wise will teach you how to use a home computer to work from home. Websites will be covered such as Squidoo, Zazzle, WAHM, and many others.  If you're looking for just a little something to supplement your income or a full time job - your computer and the Internet can help you get there. 

 Technical Jewelry Design & Creation.  Saturday, Sept. 17 from 2–4 p.m.  Ages 13 – 18.
Do you know that technology and 3D modeling are used for many hobbies, including jewelry creation? Join us in designing necklaces and bracelets online, and then completing our creations  during class time!  We supply the beads, wire, and computer applications.  You supply the ideas!

Autumn Moon: A Concert of Traditional Chinese Music.  Sunday, Sept. 18 from 2-3 p.m.  All Ages.
The Mid-Autumn Festival (also called Moon Festival) is one of the most important events in the Chinese calendar, taking place each September when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. In celebration of this joyous festival, the Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble will present a program of melodious Chinese music, with pieces composed over the span of a thousand years. Following the concert, mooncakes (a Mid-Autumn Festival delicacy) and fine Chinese black tea will be available to sample.

 

 Teen READ Book Club.  Grades 5 – 8.  Monday, Sept. 19 from 7-8 p.m. 
Join us for a book discussion club just for you! Refreshments will be served and you can win a free book as a door prize.  Contact the library for copies of the book being discussed.  Refreshments will be served.  Registration is requested.

Chef Bev’s Favorite Kitchen Tips & Techniques.  Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Join Chef Bev Shaffer, local culinary instructor and author of five cookbooks, as she shares her favorite kitchen tips and techniques with you – a “show and tell” of sorts. The evening will end with a taste of a tempting treat from one of her cookbooks.  Bev's books will be available for purchase and a signing will be held courtesy of the Friends of the Strongsville Library.


Good Morning, Strongsville Open House Speaker Series.  Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m.
A library open house speaker series of programs for Seniors and residents of Strongsville.  Our September program will be “Chair Yoga” with Yoga by Kim. 

Wednesday Evening Book Discussion.  Meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.  New members are welcome. Next discussion will be on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.  In September, we will discuss the book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. Copies will be available to pick-up at the circulation desk.  

Outer Space Drawing Lab.  Grades 2 – 5.  Saturday, Sept. 24 from 2-3 p.m.  Registration begins Sept. 12.
In the Outer Space Drawing Lab, our inspiration comes from the latest photographs available.  Participants enter the world of a science laboratory as they create a mixed media drawing with vivid color that resemble the movement of planets, asteroids and comets in outer space. Participants draw their own ideal universe on a large scale and bring home their own beautiful work of art.

 

 Monday Afternoon Book Discussion.  Meets the fourth Monday of each month at 2:30 p.m. 
New members are welcome. Next discussion will be on Monday, Sept. 26.  Copies of the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie are available at the circulation desk.

 Strongsville Saves Coupon Club.  Meets the fourth Monday of each month from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Next meeting is on Sept. 26. 
Join us for our coupon swap club and share your passion for saving with other like-minded shoppers!  Bring your scissors, and your stockpile of manufacturer coupons to share.  Share what you don't want and hopefully leave with more coupons that you really need!  This is the place to trade coupons, spend time with other coupon lovers, and share stories of great deals!  See how others organize and share tips.

Behavior-Based Interviewing Strategies.  Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Join our workshop as a Career Counselor from the Library's Career Center will show participants how to answer competency-based or behavior-based interview questions that are popular with hiring managers today.  This program will include a session of practice mock interviews.

Lisa Black Author Event.  Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
Forensic scientist and suspense author Lisa Black makes a special appearance at the Strongsville Branch to promote her new release Defensive Wounds.  Books will be available for sale and a signing will follow her presentation courtesy of the Friends of Strongsville Branch Library and Mac’s Backs – Books on Coventry.
