Like Horror Movies? Check These Out

DVD picks from the Strongsville branch library.

In honor of author Joe Hill’s visit to the at 7 p.m. March 23, here are three movies that show a different side to what people think of as horror today, courtesy of the library's expert, Joseph Jones.

The Crazies — A small peaceful Iowa town where nothing much happens. Of course we knew that could not last, as slowly the residents start to exhibit strange, deadly behaviors. As the bodies pile up, it becomes a race for Sheriff Dutton to figure out what is really happening before it is too late. This is actually a remake of a little-known 1973 film by zombie master George Romero.

Let Me In — 12-year-old Owen just wants a friend, as does 12-year-old Abby. There is only one problem -- Abby is a vampire. The plot may seem familiar since this is an American remake of the Swedish film Let the Right One In. Don’t let that turn you off, though. This film, while updating the setting, fully captures the essence of the original and shows just how far we can go for friendship.

Frozen — Besides a bad fall, what is the worst that can happen on a ski slope? Dan, Lynch and Parker soon find out things can get much worse when they try to get one last run down the mountain. Thanks to a miscommunication, they find themselves trapped on the chairlift just as the ski resort closes down for an extended time. They soon realize the horror of their situation and that help is not coming. This is a film that will have you think twice about getting into a chairlift again.
