City Clears Way for GetGo to Build in Strongsville

Council approves rezoning for gas station, convenience store

City Council has cleared the way for Giant Eagle to start planning a GetGo gas station and convenience store at the corner of Drake and Pearl roads.

The GetGo would be situated on the site of a former service station there, but would also include vacant property to the north and east of the existing building.

Council agreed to rezone two parcels totaling 1.87 acres from General Business to Motorist Services to accommodate the GetGo gas pumps and convenience store.

Todd Waldo, a Giant Eagle representative, said the Strongsville GetGo would have eight gas pumps and would include a 5,600-square-foot store with a "kitchen" concept, featuring a 36-seat cafe with deli foods, in addition to a convenience store.

The food offerings would include old-fashioned subs and breakfast sandwiches, a custom coffee and cappucino bar, smoothies, milkshakes and iced tea.

The store will create about 30 jobs, according to Waldo.

"We feel GetGo will be a valuable addition to the community," he told council Monday night.

Plans must now go to the Planning Commission for approval.

Giant Eagle officials said last year they planned to bring a GetGo to Strongsville, but did not yet have a site.

The fallback, officials said, was an outlot in front of the new Market District store under construction on Pearl Road north of Drake.

Waldo said the Strongsville GetGo will be similar to an existing GetGo in Broadview Heights and a new one that just opened in Lakewood.

The stations are popular with Giant Eagle customers because they can get discounts -- and even free tanks -- of gasoline through the store's Fuelperks program.
