Giant Eagle Clears 1 Hurdle; 1 Left to Go

New Market District store gets approval from Architectural Review Board

Strongsville's Architectural Review Board has approved the design of a on Pearl Road.

That leaves with one more step before it can break ground -- the blessing of the Planning Commission.

The commission is expected to review site plans for the new store Thursday night.

Tuesday morning went before the ARB.

Phil Bishop of Echo Realty, the company developing the new Market District store for Giant Eagle, said the newest plans take into consideration all the city's concerns.

• A parapet on top of the building has been extended and made higher to screen rooftop air conditioning units.

• The wall around the loading dock has been raised to 12 feet to block nearby residents from seeing the trucks.

• The perimeter of the parking lot will be lit with 400-watt lights on 20-foot poles. Only the 12 or so lights in the interior part of the lot will have the 1,000-watt fixtures on 30-foot poles that Giant Eagle wanted.

"We appreciate all the changes, all the revisions," ARB Chairman Bill Boron said.

The board voted 6-0 in favor of the design.

Giant Eagle plans to build the first ground-up Market District store in northeast Ohio at 15919 Pearl Rd., on the site of Strongsville Golf and Honey Hut. Voters earlier this year agreed to rezone part of the Strongsville Golf property to allow the project to proceed.

I have been following some of the articles on the Solon Patch about the new Market District store being built there. Anyone else happen to see those? Seems that Solon has helped to move that project along so well that now THAT city will be the one to get the first Market District store in the Cleveland area. Giant Eagle needed some variances to alter the plans and City Council quickly approved the changes. Let's just hope Giant Eagle doesn't change their mind about putting a Market District store here, since we've dragged this out and made it difficult - and who knows what kind of trouble those living behind are planning to pester them with in the future. I'm suprised Giant Eagle still wants to come here considering what could potentially be built across the street-a body burner! How great would that be-the waft of smoke/toxins in the air as one shops or dines @ the new Market District restaurant-No Thanks! I don't really have a problem w/a Giant Eagle in my back yard, but a crematory-there are more sensible locations for them .
