Giant Eagle May Offer Cyber Shopping at New Store

Market District to add 'Curbside Express' option

Strongsville's new Market District store could be among the first in the nation to have Curbside Express, an option to shop for your groceries online then pick them up, bagged and waiting, at the store.

Giant Eagle officials are seeking to change the design of the Pearl Road store to add about 14,000 square feet, some of which will provide room for bagging and a drive-through grocery pick-up, said Carol Oprea, planning secretary for Strongsville.

One of the two out-parcels in the parking lot will be eliminated and the space used for parking.

"You'd be able to place your order online, and they'll shop for you, bag it and take it out to your car," Oprea said.

It's a service still in its infancy for Giant Eagle, she said.

"They're just trying it out," she said.

A spokesman for Giant Eagle said the Curbside Express "is one of the services they are considering offering" with the expansion. It is not yet definite, he said.

The Market District website says the service in Pennsylvania costs $4.95.

"Our personal shoppers go to work for you! Our goal is to shop every order just as you would or better," the site says.

The new plans will go before the Strongsville Planning Commission Thursday night.

Oprea said they show expansions in some departments, and the pharmacy and liquor area have moved, with the liquor section now having a separate entrance.

A drive-up area could be added in the rear for the online shopping pickup.

In addition, Oprea said the company has added more landscaping and decorative fencing along Pearl Road.

Land for the new store on Pearl Road has been cleared and is being graded. Honey Hut Ice Cream and Strongsville Golf were razed last week.

The service was introduced in one store in Pennsylvania in April.
