Shurmer Place Adding Units in Strongsville

Altenheim has a waiting list for its assisted living apartments

The Altenheim broke ground on an expansion Monday that will add 25 new units to its Shurmer Place complex.

Strongsville officials and representatives from the business held a brief ceremony Monday morning to kick off work on the $6 million project.

The new units — 17 one-bedroom units, six efficiencies and one two-bedroom suite — are expected to open next Aug. 1, said Paul Psotas, CEO, joining the 60 independent and assisted-living units in the existing Shurmer Place.

"It's not enough. The demand just keeps going and going," Psota said. "We have a waiting list."

Altenheim, in business since 1892, moved to Strongsville in 1980 and enlarged its skilled nursing facility to 150 beds in 1991. Shurmer Place, with 60 independent- and assisted-living units, opened in 2001.

Mayor Tom Perciak said Psotas and his staff of about 260 have made the complex "pristine" and a great place for aging Strongsville residents to live.

"It's a happy environment," Perciak said.
