Want to Try Thai? Take a Bite of This Sweet Mango

The Strongsville Gourmet likes it hot, but you can go milder

If you’re tired of the burger scene, then across the street from McDonald's is , 14610 Pearl Rd. Don’t go looking for the ketchup in this spice-filled place.

After ordering my selections during a busy lunch shift, I overheard nearly everyone around my table order some kind of curry dish. Red, yellow, green, you name it, they make it. Besides what I did order, my waitress also recommended the Mango Curry that includes mango, chicken, shrimp, tomato, red pepper, onions, carrots and summer squash in a yellow curry base.

Despite missing out on curry bliss, I did more than all right with my order.

Sweet Mango certainly passed the first and, in my book, the most important test: the tea, please. I was delighted to find that they served a terrific hot tea. I find many places like this tend to brew the life out of their tea, delivering a dark, heavy tasting brew that I usually add water to in hopes of diluting the thick flavor. Not here. Their Thai herbal tea was light and flavorful but not in a forceful way. Yum. I slurped down three cups.

My first course was a very tangy Hot and Sour Shrimp Soup. Oh, my, this soup truly emphasized the “sour” in its title. The clear broth is seasoned with lemon grass and contained mushrooms, chilies, lime juice and two plump, large shrimp with tails.

When you debate the appetizers, let me make it an easy choice: The Vegetable Tempura should not be missed. This appetizer proved to be my favorite part of the meal. The plate is filled with perfectly breaded and fried pieces of green beans, carrots, zucchini, sweet potatoes (!), onions and broccoli. The sweet and sour sauce that accompanies the plate was attractive and delicious.

My choice for the main course was the Pad Thai Country Style. According to the menu, this is the spicy version of Pad Thai. If spicy means tasty, I’ll give it the nod. As for heat, I would have liked a little more.

Speaking of hot, do note that many of the items on the menu will have one to three asterisks. This refers to the heat value of that dish with one being mild, two spicy and three very spicy. Next time I’m going for three asterisks. The restaurant is more than happy to kick it up or down a notch when requested.

When you want to try Thai, this Mango makes a sweet choice.
