City Still Waiting for Discount Tire Plans

National chain seeking to build at corner of Whitney and Pearl

A national tire store that sought to rezone property at the southwest corner of Pearl and Whitney roads has yet to submit plans for the project.

The Arizona-based Discount Tire, which calls itself America's Largest Independent Tire Dealer, , including part of the former Quality Catering spot.

But Ward 4 Councilman Scott Maloney, who is council's liaison to the Planning Commission, said the company has not returned to Strongsville since submitting initial plans.

"Unfortunately, they just haven't gotten back to us yet," he said.

Maloney said city planners had several concerns about Discount Tire's plans, and the company agreed to make changes and return.

On Monday, City Council agreed to extend the deadline for the company to submit its revisions by 90 days.

Discount Tire is seeking to rezone the land from general business and restaurant-recreational to motorist services.

The company indicated in its application it was purchasing the property.

Residents in the area adamantly opposed a proposal by  last year to build on that corner. The gas station has since returned with plan to build on the same corner, but on the other side of Pearl Road.

City officials had concerns about the Discount Tire plan because it appeared the store would occupy only part of the Quality Catering property, and might not raze the vacant building.

Council President Mike Daymut said in April the city would rather see a project that would include the entire area, not a portion.

The company operates more than 800 stores in 23 states, according to its website.
