DVD recommendations from the Strongsville Library

One of the most enduring genres of films is the western. It waxes and wanes in popularity over time, but never completely goes out of style. So if you enjoyed the current film Rango or are waiting for Cowboys and Aliens, here are three classics from different eras to try, courtesy of Joseph Jones of the

The Searchers —Released in 1956, this is one of John Wayne’s best roles as he plays Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran, who hopes to settle down on his brother’s ranch in Texas. A Comanche raid changes all that when they kill several members of his family and kidnap two of his nieces. He then starts a five-year journey to get them back, but at a cost that may be too much to pay.

Unforgiven — Showing a different take on the classic heroes and villains of the Old West, Clint Eastwood plays Bill Munny, a broken-down old outlaw who now is a pig farmer. Desperate for money, he reunites with his former partner to try for one more payday. But has time passed him by or does he still have what it takes to get the job done?

3:10 to Yuma — Captured outlaw Ben Wade needs to catch a train for Yuma Prison. How hard can that be? For Dan Evans and the other men hired to transport Wade, they will find it not easy at all. Indians, railroad men and Wade’s gang all want to make sure they don’t make it to their destination. Strong performances by both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale keep the action moving to its inevitable conclusion.
