Rathbones By Janice Clark, August 2013, 384 pages.

This debut literary adventure is inspired by both The Odyssey and Moby Dick. Fifteen-year-old Mercy Rathbone’s father, the last in the dynasty of New England whalers, has been lost at sea now for seven years. When a threatening stranger shows up one night, Mercy and her Uncle Mordecai flee their mansion and set sail on a journey to explore the haunted history of the Rathbone family. Fans of Barbara Kingsolver or Alice Hoffman may enjoy this rather surreal but spellbinding family epic.
