The One I Left Behind
By Jennifer McMahon, January 2013, 432 pages. 

In 1985, a thirteen year old named Reggie is a troubled teen mixed up with a group of outcasts. This is also the summer that a serial killer going by the name Neptune is killing women and leaving their severed hands around town. Reggie’s mother is one of Neptune’s victims as they find her mother’s hand on the police department steps but they never find her body. Flashing forward, the reader finds Reggie a successful architect who is trying to get over her haunting past. That is until she gets a call letting her know that her mother has been found alive. Now Reggie must confront her past before the serial killer Neptune strikes again. Readers will enjoy this suspenseful book with an edge of your seat plot.

Sweet Tooth: a Novel
By Ian McEwan, November 2012, 304 pages.

The setting is London in 1972 and the backdrop is The Cold War. Serena Frome is a Cambridge student and is highly intelligent and beautiful. This makes her an ideal recruit for MI5, The British Intelligence Service. Serena throws herself into an undercover operation code - named Sweet Tooth. Fans of McEwan’s previous work will find this a satisfying addition to his list of novels. For those not familiar with McEwan, if you like Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, you will be a fan of this novel.

Three Good Things: a Novel
By Wendy Francis, January 2013, 256 pages.

Ellen McClarety is a recent divorcee who moves to the Midwest to open up a bakery. Her younger sister, Lanie, is a successful divorce attorney with a baby at home. However, Lanie is starting to feel like her life isn’t as perfect as she had hoped. The two sisters have always been very close. Yet one sister is keeping a secret that could tear their bond apart. Fans of books by Kristen Hannah will enjoy this new contemporary fiction novel.
