Parasite By Mira Grant, October 2013, 608 pages.

This book, set in the near future, shows the human race thriving as no one gets sick or has any diseases. This is all thanks to a company called SymboGen Corporation who has found a way to manufacture a tapeworm that lives inside the human body.  This tapeworm acts as a bodyguard, boosting the immune system and preventing disease.  Almost every human has one of these tapeworms, but what they don’t realize is that these parasites are growing restless.   They want their own way of life, and they are getting ready to do whatever they can to be free.  Full of real world science and technology, this book will appeal to fans of Michael Crichton.

The Valley of Amazement By Amy Tan, November 2013, 608 pages.

Amy Tan’s newest novel spans a time of over fifty years and two continents.  There are three generations of women that are all connected by blood and history and the mystery of a painting known as The Valley of Amazement.   We follow these women from the turn of the century Shanghai, to a remote Chinese village, to the rough streets of 19th century San Francisco.  This is truly a family saga of fate and identity.  Fans of The Joy Luck Club will certainly enjoy Tan’s latest sweeping saga about mothers and daughters, the legacy of trauma and family secrets.
