Celestials By Karen Shepard, June 2013, 320 pages.

This stirring historical fiction novel is set in 19th century industrial New England as seventy-five young Chinese workers arrive to work for industrialist Calvin Sampson. They did not speak English and did not know that they were there as strikebreakers. The locals feel even more threatened when Sampson’s wife gives birth to a mixed race baby. Fans of Andrea Barrett and Julia Glass might enjoy this elegantly written new novel.

Three Lives of Tomomi Ishikawa By Ben Constable, July 2013, 320 pages.

If you’re looking for something completely unexpected, try this imaginative debut novel. While it has the structure of a thriller or a mystery, it is more imaginative and whimsical than either genre. Writer Ben Constable has received a suicide note from his enigmatic friend, Tomomi “Butterfly” Ishikawa. He sets off on a scavenger hunt for the clues Tomomi has planted that tell her story in the hopes that there is still time to save her. There are a lot of twists and turns, word play, and even an imaginary cat. Give this book a try if you are finding your usual thrillers a bit stale.
