Murder, She Rode By Holly Menino, August 2013, 288 pages.

While Dick Francis set his mysteries in the world of horse-racing, mystery newcomer Menino has set her new series around eventing – a kind of triathlon for horses and riders. Tink Elledge is a former world class rider and trainer whose prize horse is running in the forthcoming Brandywine Three Day event. When an injury prevents her from riding, Tink reluctantly must step aside for her protégé to take over. But before the event can take place, a worker from a rival stable is killed in a road accident, an injured talented colt must be put down, and then a young rider disappears. Can Tink unravel the plot? This blue ribbon debut is recommended for Dick Francis fans.

Seven for a Secret By Lindsay Faye, September 2013, 464 pages.

This is the second installment in a new mystery series featuring Timothy Wilde, a police officer working for the newly formed New York Police Department in 1846. Wilde is investigating the illegal world of blackbirders – a group of people that are capturing free people of color in the North and taking them down South to sell them to plantation owners. A scared young woman named Lucy Adams asks for Timothy’s help as her family has been taken from her by the blackbirders. This well written, twisted historical thriller is an exciting read that gives readers a fascinating look at 1840’s New York City.
