Cowley graduated Strongsville High School in 1986 and Kent State University in 1991, then wrote for the Lorain Morning Journal and Lake County News Herald before moving to Chicago to cover the White Sox.

He became a sports columnist for the Sun-Times in 2010.

Some of the Twitter messages were directed at a female colleague who responded to his initial tweets about a "chick pilot" and a lack of "hot" flight attendants on the plane he was in, according to the website and to Huffington Post.

He later deleted the Twitter account.
