A Few Facts About the Police Department You Might Not Know

Some interesting -- if random -- tidbits of information from the annual report

Here are some random facts about police work in Strongsville, culled from the department's 2010 annual report.

More calls came in last year between 1 and 2 p.m. than any other hour of the day.
Not by much, though -- the only times of day when there were fewer than 1,000 calls (for the year) were the hours between 3 and 7 a.m.

Lockouts accounted for 4 percent of the department's calls.
By comparison, thefts accounted for 3 percent and alarms for 6 percent. The 4 percent for lockouts, by the way, translates to 1,562.

Accident hotspot was Royalton Road, with 120 crashes.
Next was Pearl Road with 44, I-71 with 41, Howe Road with 26 and Prospect Road with 18.

31 cars were stolen in Strongsville last year.
That's three fewer than in 2009.

Police dogs were called into service 172 times and accounted for 10 arrests.
Three of the department's dogs work regular day, afternoon and evening shifts, while the fourth specializes in narcotics.

There were 440 shoplifting offenses reported last year.

The new jail can hold up to 24 prisoners.
The old jail, built in 1949, could house only three. And if more than 24 come in, there are holding cells in the booking room, too.
