Drugs By the Pound: Take-Back Nets Thousands of Pills

Strongsville police turn over old prescriptions to DEA

Dozens of residents took advantage of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday, turning over 308 pounds of unused medication to Strongsville police.

The department set up a tent in the parking lot, allowing people to drive up and drop off expired or unneeded prescription pills without even leaving their cars.

"A lot of people are turning in medication that was left over when a spouse or family member died," said Sgt. Mike Grywalsky, who organized the local event.

The National Take-Back Initiative was created by the DEA, with local partners including Drug Awareness and Prevention Inc.

Grywalsky said Strongsville decided to participate this year to give residents a close-to-home place to dispose of unneeded medication and ended up filling 20 boxes.

He said that given the success of this year's effort, Strongsville police will probably participate again next year.

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department also operated local take-back sites.
