Expect Gridlock for a Few More Days

Pearl Road tentatively set to reopen Friday morning

Prepare for more bumper-to-bumper traffic on Royalton Road and other streets for most of this week as repairs continue on Pearl Road.

With luck -- and good weather -- Pearl will reopen on Friday, according to the Service Department.

But rain on Tuesday could delay the start of asphalt work, and ultimately the opening.

One northbound lane on Pearl Road has been open for the last few days as workers replaced a 30-inch water main that ruptured early April 25.

Cleveland Division of Water employees said Saturday they expected to finish their part of the job that afternoon or Sunday.

Next step is paving the road with asphalt and re-striping the lanes.

With Pearl mostly closed, roads like Prospect, Albion, Webster and West 130th have seen a huge increase in traffic volume.

Last Wednesday -- the day of the water main break -- the city was nearly crippled by gridlock when a multi-car accident closed lanes on I-71 southbound north of Royalton Road.

Motorists complained on Saturday that it took 10 minutes to inch a mile on Royalton Road.
