Firefighters Train to Rescue People Trapped in Vehicles

Strongsville firemedics tear apart cars and a school bus to practice extrication techniques

Strongsville firefighters spent the week working on their extrication skills, demolishing several cars and a school bus to practice rescuing people trapped in their vehicles after a crash.

Lt. Harry Drennan said the department typically trains in extrication twice a year.

"It's one of the most intense operations the department performs," Drennan said. "It's usually at night, and on the highway. It's dangerous for us and for the patient."

The Strongsville City Schools donated a bus that had been taken out of service, and Rich's Towing provided cars the firefighters could cut apart as they simulated a rescue.

The training took place over three days at Fire Station No. 4.
