Garage on Blazey Trail Destroyed by Fire

Structure a total loss; cause may have been electrical

A garage at 14006 Blazey Trail was completely destroyed by a fire that was reported about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20.

Strongsville Assistant Fire Chief Jack Draves said the garage was fully involved in flames when the first fire crews arrived on the scene.

A neighbor called 911, he said.

Because all Strongsville units were already out on other calls -- including three medical calls and a mutual aid garage fire in Brunswick -- Strongsville called the North Royalton Fire Department for help.

The first firefighters were able to suppress the fire and protect the nearby house. Other Strongsville units then completed their calls and were able to join them, Draves said.

The fire was under control within 30 minutes, he said, and then overhaul efforts began.

The Strongsville Service Department was asked to bring an excavator to tear down the structure and move debris so that all the fire could be extinguished without risking the safety of firefighters by putting them inside the weakened structure.

The garage was a complete loss. Damage was estimated at $35,000. The owner has no insurance.

A total of 15 firefighters operated at the scene.  The cause of the fire is undetermined, but an electrical problem, most likely an overloaded and undersized multi-outlet strip and extension cord, cannot be ruled out, Draves said.
