Man Charged with Trying To Steal $1,300 in Games, DVDs from Mall

Authorities say he left store with 'extremely big midsection'

An Akron man who allegedly tried to steal $1,300 worth of DVDs and games from at Westfield SouthPark May 19 was ordered held on $2,500 bond at an arraignment today.

Lavarne Davis, 32, was indicted on one count of theft in connection with the incident.

According to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason's office, Davis set off alarms when he walked into the store and was asked to leave his shopping bag and state ID card at the entrance.

He complied. He walked around the store for awhile, then returned to the counter and got his ID back and tried to leave without purchasing anything.

An employee noticed Davis' clothes were "extremely big around his midsection" and asked him to walk through the sensor detectors, which went off, Mason's office said.

Davis then reportedly opened his shirt and store merchandise consisting of DVDs and video games valued at approximately $1,300 fell out. He fled.

An arrest warrant was issued May 27 and he was taken into custody May 31.
