Updated: Tuesday at 1:40pm

The eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed in Strongsville Tuesday afternoon for a semi-truck fire, report our partners at WEWS News Channel 5. No injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished about 12:45 p.m.

Strongsville Fire Chief Jeff Branic said his department got two 911 calls about the truck hitting a barrier and catching on fire just before noon.

Strongsville sent 10 firefighters on a rescue squad, two fire engines and a command vehicle.

Firefighters from Brecksville, Broadview Heights and North Royalton also responded.

Branic said Strongsville attacked the blaze with water carried on its trucks, and North Royalton established a permanent water supply by hand-laying several hundred feet of hose from Royalton Road.

The fire continued to burn until the diesel fuel from the truck could be extinguished, and was under control about 12:45 p.m.

Rich’s Towing Service and an excavator from a nearby construction project were used to pull the debris apart so that all remaining fire could be extinguished, Branic said.

The westbound lanes remained open.

Fox 8 reports that the cargo truck was carrying cherries.
