Don't Forget: Set Clocks Ahead Tonight

We lose an hour tomorrow thanks to daylight saving

Tonight is the night we set our clocks ahead an hour for daylight saving time.

The change technically takes place at 2 a.m. Sunday, but for most of us, it means changing clocks before bed tonight -- and losing an hour of sleep.

Interim State Fire Marshal Donald Cooper is reminding Ohioans to make a potentially lifesaving change when they move their clocks forward: Change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

The fire marshal encourages Ohioans to make it a habit to change the batteries in their smoke detectors at least twice a year – at the beginning and end of daylight saving time.

"The facts speak clearly – only a working smoke detector can save your life," Cooper said. "By taking the time to change the batteries and by testing them monthly, you are doing more to affect the fire safety of your family and home than any other action you could take."

Through March 1, 28 people have died in 22 fatal residential fires reported this year to the Division of State Fire Marshal. Smoke detectors were confirmed present in 10 (45 percent) of those fires and functioning in only one (5 percent) of the incidents.
