Expect Albion Road to Be Closed a Few More Months -- At Least

City doesn't expect repairs to be made till summer

A section of Albion Road that has been closed since May will stay that way till at least this summer.

City Engineer Ken Mikula said plans to fix the crumbling roadway are still in the hands of an engineering firm the city hired in last July.

"Our consultant is still working on the plans and specifications," Mikula said in an email.

The road has been closed at the Albion Woods picnic area, near Valley Parkway, since May 10, when officials noticed the road had crumbled down a hillside.

The repair is complicated, officials said, because the asphalt has washed away down a steep hillside, meaning the road will probably have to be realigned, shifting it away from the embankment onto right-of-way on the other side of the street.

Mikula said he expects the consulting firm to have plans ready in May so City Council can bid the project.

"Construction could begin sometime this summer," he said.

Meanwhile, that stretch of road will stay closed, with barricades at Handle Road on the east side and at Valley Parkway on the west.

Residents of the 13 homes west of Handle Road are permitted to use the road.

Mikula has said the steepness of the slope, coupled with water runoff, created the erosion problem.
