Minorities in Strongsville are Younger, Have Bigger Families than White Residents

New U.S. Census date breaks down population by race

The 2010 Census already told us that Strongsville has , with races other than white making up a bigger portion of the population.

In fact, the figures show that that minorities account for all of the increase in population the city saw between 2000 and 2010, while the number of white residents decreased.

The Census Bureau released new breakdowns this week that give more insight into the minority population:

1. Strongsville is getting more diverse

The city's hispanic and Latino population jumped 64 percent over the decade, from 557 to 912; the number of black or African American residents went up 53 percent (from 551 to 845); and the Asian population increased 30 percent (from 1,406 to 1,833).

2. Minority populations are younger

Median age for Strongsville's white population is 45, while the median for Asians is 38.7, for black or African American it's 38.4, and for hispanic or Latino, 26.9.

3. Asians have the largest families, whites the smallest

Average family size is: Asian, 3.43 people; Hispanic, 3.41; Black, 3.11; White, 3.02

4. Whites and Asians have the highest home ownership rate

About 81.7 percent of white Strongsville residents own their homes, as do 81.6 percent of Asian residents. Only 50.7 percent of black or African Americans live in their own homes, while for hispanics, the rate is 65.8 percent.

5. Minority families have more young kids; Asians, whites have more 'traditional' families

Of white households in Strongsville, 71 percent are families, and 29 percent are families with children under 18. Husband-wife families make up 60 percent of the white households.

In black households, 66 percent are families, and 31 percent have kids under 18. Husband-wife families make up 47 percent of black households.

For Asian households, 85 percent are families; 77 percent are husband-wife families; and 45 percent of households have kids.

In hispanic households, 75 percent are families, and 42 percent have kids. Husband-wife families account for 59 percent of households.

6. Strongsville's population is still mostly white

The number of people who listed their race as white dropped from 41,304 in 2000 to 41,185 in 2010 -- a total of 119 people.

The overall population of Strongsville went up by 892 people -- from 43,858 to 44,750 -- for a gain of about 2 percent.

White people make up about 92 percent of the city's population, followed by Asian (4.1 percent), hispanic or Latino (2 percent), black or African American (1.9 percent) and people who list themselves as being two or more races (1.4 percent).

That same trend is reflected statewide. In Ohio, the white population decreased 1.1 percent in the last decade, while the hispanic population went up 48 percent; Asian, 45 percent; black, 8 percent; and two or more races, 51 percent.
