Royalton Road Traffic Signals are Synchronized Again

Fewer jams are reported since lights were re-timed

A malfunction in the timing of traffic signals on Royalton Road has been fixed, helping end the gridlock that was causing between Pearl Road and Interstate 72 for the last few weeks.

The signal problems stem from an accident on the I-71 ramp that knocked a traffic control box off its concrete foundation, according to John Bedford, the city's director of technology.

The box was replaced, but the synchronization of the signals has been off, causing gridlock and forcing drivers to sit through green lights because traffic hasn't cleared the intersection.

"Cars were stacked up even when the lights turned green," Bedford said.

But he said work crews recently finished re-timing the lights to let traffic flow more easily down the road between Pearl and I-71.

Strongsville's traffic signals are on a high-tech synchronization system that adjusts itself to accommodate traffic flow and keep vehicles moving. The system, like those in many other area communities, was largely paid with a grant as part of a program to improve air quality by keeping vehicles from idling a red lights.

Bedford said that when the Pearl Road widening project is finished, the city will take a new look at the major intersections -- Pearl and Royalton, Royalton and I-71, Pearl and I-71 -- and see if traffic flow can be improved.

"We're always looking at new ways," he said. "We're real close, but we're not there yet."
