Taking Technology for a Test-Drive

Visitors at library try out the latest gadgets at 'petting zoo'

Ever want to nuzzle a Nook? Interact with an iPad?

The Cuyahoga County Public Library’s Technology Petting Zoo was the place to be for those feeling a little “technologically impaired” or just curious about some of the latest gadgets.

The free event July 9 at the gave participants hands-on interaction with iPads, iPods, Nooks, laptop computers and more. Guests were able to ask questions of staff who were in-the-know and also learn tips for interacting with the library through technology.

“People want to know the difference between the different forms of technology and what they can do with it,” said Becky Ranallo, the library’s Internet and media services manager.  “We’re not trying to sell anything, but show people what experiences we have had with the technology. All of the staff is technology converts and we can be honest with people about what we have learned.”

This is the second Technology Petting Zoo to date —and because of the program’s success, two more events are planned this year.  The next Technology Petting Zoo will take place at the North Olmsted branch in September and another is scheduled in December at the Brooklyn Library.  Additional pieces of technology will be added as the program continues, Ranallo said.

Ranallo said she and her staff can also help trouble-shoot problems people may have with their computers or other forms of technology at the Petting Zoo.

“It’s really about showing the gamut of what you can use and how things work,” she said.
