Protesters Gather Outside Strongsville School Board Member's Office and Home

Striking Strongsville teachers tried a new tactic Tuesday, sending protesters to the workplace of School Board member Carl Naso in Beachwood.

Naso said about 40 union supporters, some carrying signs with his employer's phone number, walked and yelled in front of his office from about 3 to 6 p.m.

"They shouted and bullied my coworkers as they went in and out of the building," Naso said. "And they shouted insults about me."

But he was more upset that about 50 members of the Strongsville Education Association, which represents the striking teachers, also gathered in front of his home at the same time.

"They knew I was still at work, and they still sent people to my house," Naso said. "They knew only my wife and daughter were home."

Worse, in his opinion, was that teachers from his 10-year-old daughter's school -- including her current-year teacher -- were among those at his house.

"Is it really about the kids if my daughter has to look outside and see her teacher out there?" Naso said.

SEA members have been gathering in front of Strongsville School Board members' homes in the evenings during the 17-day-old teachers' strike.

Last week, the North Eastern Ohio Education Association sent a letter to teachers in nearby districts, asking for volunteers to stand outside board members homes Mondays through Thursdays.

Board members have said little about the protests, but Naso said his daughter was upset to see her current and past teachers outside.

"I get it if you want to strike," he said. "But there are lines you don't cross."
