Strongsville School Board Calls Special Meeting to Discuss Substitutes

Members say they weren't involved in decision to ban subs who worked here during teachers strike

The Strongsville School Board has called a special meeting for 8 a.m. Saturday to discuss employment of personnel.

The meeting was called by Board President David Frazee after learning the district's administration had banned substitute teachers who filled in during the teachers strike from working here this school year.

"This is not the way these substitutes who sacrificed so much for this city, our students and this district should ever be treated," Frazee said.

Assistant Superintendent Cameron Ryba sent letters to the teachers who worked here during the strike and who asked to be included on the substitute teacher roster for the 2013-14 school year, telling them they would not be working in Strongsville.

Ryba said it was "in the best interests of our district moving forward" to not use subs who were here during the strike.

Frazee said the School Board was not consulted about the decision.

Saturday's meeting will include a closed-door session because personnel will be discussed. It may also include action by the board after the executive session.
