Students + Interests = Extra Credit!

New Patch column will focus on what kids are doing outside the classroom and off the playing fields

Welcome to “Extra Credit,” a new column at Strongsville Patch.

With more than 7,300 students attending public and private schools in Strongsville, we want to have a space where those students, their families and friends can learn about what they are involved in primarily outside of the classroom.

My name is Sharon Galvan.  I am a northeast Ohio native and have been a resident of Strongsville for 12 years; our two kids graduated from SHS.  I have always enjoyed reading community news and have written for a local paper in the past.  However, during all these years of living in Strongsville, I have long wondered why the only school news I read was limited mostly to levies, budgets or sports.

It’s time that changed.

So, here is what you’ll be reading about in “Extra Credit”:  The individual Strongsville student and/or groups in grades K-12 that attend Sts. Joseph and John and Strongsville City Schools and are involved in school-based organizations, clubs and activities, competitions and volunteer efforts within the school walls and/or in the community.

Any student who makes a difference in his or her own life or the lives of others, outcomes of individual or group activities and achievements, whether they are performances, recognitions and awards, will get a nod here.

You can still read about the athletic prowess; I’ll leave that to the Patch sportswriters.  And school levies and budget issues – well, that’s news for another column.

Strongsville City Schools and Sts. Joseph and John administration, faculty, club advisors and student officers are encouraged to submit information for “Extra Credit” including upcoming events, photos, etc.  Let us know what’s going on!
