Company seeking to build second location in Strongsville
The proposed Sheetz at the corner of Whitney and Pearl roads is moving forward. Company representatives last week sought approval of a 6,558-square-foot gas station with convenience store and car wash for the southeast corner of the intersection. Sheetz also asked the Planning Commission to approve 419 square feet for an inside eating area seating up to 27, and for 715 square feet outside for a patio seating a maximum of 22 people. The commission did not approve the plans, instead referring developers to the Board of Zoning Appeals for conditional use permits for both the outside patio and for a small propane storage area. Police received a complaint about a woman who approached school bus drivers May 17 and asked if they knew any pregnant girls who wanted to give up their babies. The woman drove off, but police were able to track her down. The woman said she was concerned about teenage abortion and wanted to make sure girls at Strongsville High School had the right information. She was told to speak with the principal or superintendent if she wanted to pass along any more information. Roadside Demonstration Employees at Sheetz called police shortly before midnight May 19 after a group of about five teens set up lawn chairs at the corner of Prospect and Royalton Roads and yelled "white power" at passing traffic. The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward for information which would lead to the capture of fugitive Demetrice Cannon.
Demetrice Cannon, 28, is wanted by the U.S. Marshals and the Cleveland Police for aggravated murder. It is alleged that Cannon shot and killed a man after an argument during a dice game, according to a press release. The incident took place earlier this month on May 2. Cannon is a black male standing approximately 5’05” and weighing 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Cannon is suspected to be hiding out somewhere in the Cleveland area. He also had a previous address near the 1200 block of E. 80th St. in Cleveland. A shopper at Walmart thought he was being careful when he bought a $100 gift card from another customer for $50 about 10:30 p.m. May 10. The shopper took the card to a cashier, who confirmed there was, in fact, $100 on the card. But when he tried to use it to make a purchase later, he discoverd the seller had switched cards, giving him one with no value instead of the one with $100. Drama at the Dance Police were called to Michaud's about 9:30 p.m. May 11 after a scuffle between two girls. The victim told police she accidentally stepped on another girl's dress, and the girl pushed her, causing her to stumble. The victim said she was pregnant and suffering stomach pain. Police here will join national safety campaign to get motorists to wear seatbelts
Strongsville Police will join the national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization May 20 to June 2. "We'll have extra officers out on the major thoroughfares," Sgt. Mike Grywalsky said. "There will be zero tolerance." Don't think you can sneak by unbuckled in the dark, either. Because nighttime passengers are least likely to buckle up and the most likely to die in crashes, overnight enforcement has become a priority of the Click It or Ticket mobilization. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thieves have targeted certain areas in 13 northeast Ohio cities, including Strongsville, according to our partners at NewsNet5.com.
Our partners at NewsChannel5 have uncovered reports of thefts from apartment complex rent drop boxes in 13 Northeast Ohio towns, including Twinsburg. The towns and cities that have targeted by rent drop box thieves include Broadview Heights, Brunswick, Brimfield Township, Coventry Township, Cuyahoga Falls, Jackson Township, Medina, Montville, North Royalton, Perry Township, Strongsville, Stow and Twinsburg. Surveillance cameras at Wyoga Lake Commons in Cuyahoga Falls captured a theft on May 2. In the video, you see the thief insert a wire with a sticky substance on it into the complex's rent drop box. As a retired firefighter/paramedic here in Strongsville, I can say that the simple act of wearing seatbelts can save lives. Over the course of my career, I was on the scene of any number of serious accidents, such as rollovers, where seat-belt wearing occupants were able to walk away with minor injuries.
