Mustangs avenge loss with 2-0 victory over Columbia Station
On an afternoon when the only thing more difficult than staying warm was getting a hit off of Strongsville's ace pitcher Emily Kolezynski, the Lady Mustangs rebounded from their only loss of the season less than 24 hours prior by beating a Division III standout, the Columbia Station Raiders, 2-0. The Mustangs got to Columbia pitcher Emily Gault, a junior, early with a run in the first and another in the third, and it's a good thing they did. After the third inning, the 'Stangs could only muster one hit and one walk off the settled-down Gault for the remaining four innings. While the Mustangs earned only 2 runs off of seven hits and two walks, it proved to be all they needed. The Mustangs opened the first inning with two bunt singles by …

Mustangs put it all together in season opener.
Despite the cold weather, the Lady Mustang softball team got off to a great start on Monday. For the first time this season, the team got to play outdoors. Prior to opening day, all practices were held indoors. "Solon always has a well-coached team" said Coach Howard describing their conference foe, the Comets. After Mustang pitcher Emily Kolezynski gave up a leadoff double to Solon's Dani Zysek, she settled down and got the next three outs. Kolezynski, while only throwing four strike-outs, faced just two over the limit in her five scoreless innings pitched. In the bottom of the first, the Mustangs got to face their first opposing team pitcher, and they made the best of it. After co-captain Michelle Murach flew out deep to centerfield, the…

Coach Howard positive, team ready to play
The Lady Mustangs softball team will be heading into their sixth season under the direction of head coach Jeanette Howard. This year's squad will see more seniors than in past years, led by four-year first team All Conference standout Natalie Mariano. When Natalie takes control behind the dish this year, she will be vying for her third year of All District honors, and trying to repeat as Northeast Ohio's Catcher of the Year. Other seniors making people notice include shortstop Colleen Mackenzie and first baseman Danielle Kountz, who will both be suiting up for Cuyahoga Community College next year. While Natalie Mariano is still undecided as to where she will play in the future, pitching ace Emily Kolezynski will be taking her skills to the…

Smolik's 24 points lead Lady Mustangs to 62-45 win over St. Joseph Academy
Strongsville High School's girls basketball players have their wish -- a tournament game against powerful Midpark. The Lady Mustangs earned the right to play one of the area's top teams by defeating St. Joseph Academy, 62-45, in a Division I District Tournament game at Valley Forge on Thursday night. "Before the tournament, I asked the girls where they would prefer playing," coach Jeff Eicher said. "They said they wanted to go wherever Midpark went. After the game tonight, I told them, 'Well, you've got them.' " Strongsville (14-7) advanced on the strong shooting of Audrey Smolik and Carly Thomas. Smolik scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half and Thomas added 15 points overall. The Lady Mustangs took command with a 10-0 run to close…

Sammi Hargis, Gabi D'Abato lead Mustang girls to first win against Comets
It was a night of firsts on Wednesday for the Strongsville High School swim team, which swept past Solon on both the girls and boys side of the pool in Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division action. The Mustangs got the best of the Comets by taking the boys meet, 201-114, while the Strongsville girls were able to edge Solon, 165-150. "It was a big win for us," said Strongsville head coach Tom Stacy. "It was the first time our girls have ever beaten Solon in a dual meet. I am very proud of this team, especially the seniors." Earlier in January, the Mustang boys were first in the NOC Valley Division championship meet at Cleveland State with 591.5 points, with Hudson second at 461 and Solon third at 436. Twinsburg stays undefeated as Strongsville drops to 4-3
The Lady Mustangs had their hands full Dec. 18 as they played host to the Cleveland area's No.1 girls basketball team, the undefeated Twinsburg Tigers. The Mustangs' new girls head coach, Jeff Eicher, said he was most concerned with Twinsburg's 6'4" junior center, Malina Howard. Howard, a good 3 inches taller than anyone on the Mustang squad, has already been contacted by numerous Division 1 schools, and with good reason. The Mustangs, riding a four-game win streak, have adapted well to the new head coach. Eicher said the girls,"play hard and practice well." He knows there will be adjustments for the girls with a new coach, but said he is pleased with their efforts, attitude and progress. The game started slowly after tipoff, …
