Welcome to Roth Field

Baseball diamond is dedicated to retiring Ward 3 councilman

A baseball diamond at Volunteer Park officially became Roth Field Thursday in honor of retiring Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth. "I am so thankful and humbled," Roth said in an emotional speech. "The perpetual nature of this is overwhelming." Roth, 57, is not seeking re-election after six terms as Ward 3 representative. He also plans to retire from his career as an electrician in May so he and his wife, Lisa, can travel and spend time with their four children and five grandchildren. "I don't know if you're going to enjoy retirement, but give it a shot and see what happens," Mayor Tom Perciak jokingly told Roth at the field dedication ceremony Thursday afternoon. Council President Mike Daymut presented Roth with a proclamation from …

City officials will host a ceremony at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Volunteer Park to name a baseball field for Councilman Mark Roth. Roth, who has represented Ward 3 for 24 years, is not seeking re-election. His term expires at the end of this year.

Mayor Happy to Accept Another Term in Office

Perciak unopposed in his re-election bid

While mayors in other cities will battle to keep their jobs this year, Mayor Tom Perciak will quietly slide into another term. No candidates filed to run for mayor of Strongsville, leaving Perciak unopposed for this third term in office. "I'm just thankful I'll have the opportunity to serve the residents for another four years," he said. The mayor acknowledged he was a little relieved to be unopposed at the polls. "It will let me stay focused on what I need to do," Perciak said. "An election would take time away from the job." Also unopposed is Council President Mike Daymut, who represents Ward 1. But there will be primary elections in May in Wards 2, 3 and 4, where multiple candidates are seeking election, according to the Cuyahoga County…

City Council Candidates Line Up for Ward Seats

Mayor unopposed, but primaries set in three races

With one day left for candidates to file for municipal offices in Strongsville, Mayor Tom Perciak remains unopposed. Also running alone -- so far -- is Council President Mike Daymut, who represents Ward 1. But there will be primary elections in Wards 2, 3 and 4, where multiple candidates are seeking election, according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. A five-way primary is shaping up in Ward 2, where incumbent Ray Haseley faces opposition from Nathan Prahst, Matthew Schonhut, William White and Anthony Zubek. In Ward 3, where long-time incumbent Mark Roth has said he will not seek re-election, three candidates have filed as of today -- Jim Carbone, Larry Frawley and Tom McMillen. Three candidates have also filed petitions for the …

Mayor Perciak Quietly Files for Re-Election

Seeks third four-year term leading the city

Without fanfare, Mayor Tom Perciak has filed petitions seeking re-election to a third term in office. Perciak filed the documents Wednesday at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections. So far, he is the only candidate for mayor.  In typical Perciak style, his decision to seek re-election came without an announcement or publicity. "My whole goal is continuity -- to keep everyone focused and moving the way we have been," he said. He is the first Strongsville candidate to formally file for election this year. "I just want the people to know I'm still out there, still active and still want to be their mayor," Perciak said. The mayor's job and all four City Council ward seats are up for grabs this year. Council President Mike Daymut, who …

Mike Daymut is New City Council President

Mark Roth takes over as president pro tem

Ward 1 Councilman Mike Daymut was unanimously elected the new president of City Council by his peers Monday night. Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth got the nod for council president pro tem, meaning he will fill in when Daymut cannot attend a meeting. They replace former Ward 4 Councilman Mike Gallagher, who resigned to start duties on the new Cuyahoga County Council, and Councilman at large Joe DeMio, who served as pro tem last year. Council elects members to both positions at its organizational meeting every year. Daymut, whose duties include presiding at council meetings, said he was happy to accept the leadership role. "It's an honor to serve, as it always is in the city of Strongsville," he said. Daymut, as council president, will make …

No New Applications Taken for Ward 4 Council Seat

Committee votes not to extend deadline for candidates to replace Mike Gallagher

City Council won't extend the deadline for Ward 4 residents to apply for the seat left vacant by Mike Gallagher. Council members who comprise an ad hoc search committee to fill the open seat voted 3-0 Thursday afternoon against re-opening the position to new applicants  despite objections from Ward 3 Councilman Mark Roth, who said he believed many would-be candidates failed to apply because they assumed the deadline was Jan. 31. Gallagher resigned effective Jan. 31 to assume his duties Jan. 1 as an elected member of the new Cuyahoga County Council. "I thought it was a very short (application) window, and a lot of people missed that window," Roth said. Roth said he believes Ward 4 residents should have until Jan. 31 to apply for the post, …
